excessive crankcase pressure / oil leak

Postby Impact Pete » Sun Dec 07, 2025 4:12 pm

Hi hoping to get some extra pearls of wisdom here on my 12 plate tourneo
My engine started with a mild oil leak on the drive bit annoying but initially as the whole engine was covered at the front including the top of the rocker case, my methanic replaced the oil injector seals etc, after that the top half of the engine is free of oil, but as I still had small oil pools on the driveway I got him back to further investigate, he found oil bubbling at the air inlet manifold so he sent me to a garage in Derby that did a crankcase pressure test, they came back saying it was excessive and could be either a clogged/stuck PCV valve or a failing engine. The engine sounds spot on and has plenty of power at speed and has happily towed a twin axle caravan all summer (apart from a couple of moments up hill when it went into limp home mode).

So has anyone else had similar issues and positive outcomes?
My family heavily rely on this vehicle everyday so its going to be a big blow if its not economically fixable.

Other points to note,
1. I've had more than 1 turbo blow in the last 6 years however one was possibly diagnosed as a wearing guide rail on timing chain? as parts of this were apparently found when they replaced the timing chain 2 years ago.
2. While towing a heavy caravan up hill occasionally the engine has dropped into limp home mode but this only happens after at least an hour of towing.
3. i get puffs of smoke on start up not first thing but after a restart when engine is warm.
4. Not lost a drop of coolant in the 6 years we have had it.
5. Starts perfectly every time

would appreciate any help or advice thank you

Think you need a compression test to really find out . it could be the beginnings of a holed piston.

You never said how many miles on it .. if over 180,000 could be a worn engine , bore wear etc

Note euro 5 which is yours, had a rocker cover that had orange rubber breather valves inside that are known to fall out .
Also its possible to service the injectors with new seals and still have them leak because the injector seats need re-cutting

Hi its done 149,000 I thought that was what they had tested for re compression test I will have to check with them next week, cost me an hours labour

Thought i would update this post, i had the rocker cover changed with a new pressure relief sensor and since it was done in february ive had no oil leaks and its all running well, occasionally get a run of smoke out the back but i think i have issues with dpf not getting chance to regenerate due to multiple short trips

12 plate = 2012. Mk 7 E5 Siemens Continental fuel system. Electronics not the same as previous Mk7s.
pressure relief sensor - NO sensor. There is a pressure relief and oil vapour separation system on the rocker box.
issues with dpf - re' your posts - very likely.

oil bubbling at the air inlet manifold - diff to find unless the oil was laying on the top of the manifold with the engine running and there being pressure in the manifold.
Derby that did a crankcase pressure test, Odd assessment.
stuck PCV valve - also odd.
apart from a couple of moments up hill when it went into limp home mode. Could be partial exhaust restriction. Could be the BCM/PCM need As built plus other diagnostic resets/reboots, rejuvenation.

Hi sorry meant relief valve not sensor, since he has changed it there has been no oil leaks from anywhere on the engine, the mechanic I use has suggested the limp mode may be due to the air inlet manifold at the time getting oil in so hopefully when I tow this year it will be fine.

I do need to look at the dpf data if possible as I'm getting lousy mpg and the cooling fan is running excessively suggesting the dpf is working overtime to rejuvenate, hes said to clean it out using the correct chemicals and replacing the dpf sensor is around £300

FWD or RWD?
The eng' coolant fan on the RWD that I have turns when cold.
Likely there is eng' oil in the inlet system from where it connects to the rocker box through the turbo to the inlet valves. Likely the inlet manifold is gunged up - restricted esp after the EGR.
DPF see ORiley youtube. From your post you'll need the inlet and the exhaust cleaning out.
After doing stuff on the eng' there are some diagnostics to be done - Can use Forscan - can find out using AI. AI tells lies. You need to know a good bit about what you are asking about! Your mechanic may have access to the required info' using AllData or the like - which is not free.
Lots of reasons why limp mode occurs.
