Whine when driving

Postby waerhy » Thu Feb 12, 2026 12:50 am

Evening all. I have a mk7 2.2 fwd 6 speed 115. When driving there is a whine that gets louder with speed. Seems to be coming from the front. All 4 wheel bearings are less than a year old and I have replaced the full drivers side drive shaft and intermediate bearing. I have checked the wheel bearings by jacking up and spinning by hand and rocking in the 12 and 6 o clock positions but can't find any play or noise. I'm suspecting gearbox ( i recently changed the oil in it last week). Any suggestions as to how I can pin point a bit better before I purchase a new gearbox? The van is currently on 203000 miles

Thanks

Have used a camcorder slung underneath to locate a sound.
Not the best way as it picks up a lot of different sounds.
Need to have it in different positions with the microphone pointing at whatever you think is making the noise. Can be used to determine that the sound is not coming from a particular area.
Can take a few hours to do 4 recordings.

Have a passenger - better a mechanic - in the passenger seat - that which is heard in one part of the van is not heard in another part. Someone in the back listening at different positions.

If the rubber boot has sat wrong it'll rub and make a sound.

Does it make more noise under load or on the overrun..?? Does it make the noise in all gears..?? In neutral rolling down a hill..?? Does turning left or right cause any difference..??

Same noise all the way through the gears. Dipping the clutch and rolling at 50 the noise is still there. Left or right turning gives no difference in sound. I jacked of both front wheels and put into gear today. when i stop the passenger wheel and only let the drivers side turn the noise is still there, but when i stop the drivers side and let the passenger side spin the noise is no more. The wheel bearing was from GSF car parts and can only have 10,000 miles on it. I'm going to change it for another and see if the noise goes if it doesn't then it has to be gearbox right?

if the centre drive shaft bearing is on the drivers side,, then that's possibly the culprit.

edit .. you replaced that

so ???

Did you torqued the bearing to the specified 320NM (preload value)?
