New clutch and gearbox, slave cylinder bleeding issues

Postby madmart132 » Sat Feb 14, 2026 3:46 am

Hi hopefully someone will have solved similar issues ,just before Christmas I burnt out the clutch on my 2003 rwd 2.3 petrol engine transit , parts are basically the same as 2.4 diesel, mt75 and slave cylinder etc
Anyway fitted clutch flywheel and a gearbox all from a van that was known to me and without any problems, I then fitted a brand new slave cylinder to the gearbox and tried to bleed it but without success
First question is it possible to fit clutch plate wrong way round or back to front ?
And anyone else had trouble bleeding the clutch slave cylinder ?

Have you tried reverse bleeding it if you haven’t got the pump tool it can be done by putting a flexible pipe from the front brake calaper bleed nipple to the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder then open the nipples and pump the brake pedal not sure if you can put the clutch plate on wrong way round as never done that but would expect it to foul on the flywheel and hold the cover off flywheel

it's possible on some engines but would have a pedal , it'll air in the system so make sure the fluid pipe has correct seal on it (may have stuck in old cylinder ) and same with your bleed nipple make sure if it's the type with rubber seals
and bleed as suggested by oor Dumper

I may be the only eejit on here that has fitted a clutch plate on the wrong way around, but I can confirm that it's possible, and when I did it, the clutch wouldn't fully disengage.

In my defense, I had only ever fitted a clutch to a classic 850 mini, and on those the clutch plate does fit the opposite way around. The clutch plate that I was fitting to a RWD Mk2 Escort didn't have the sides marked as they all seem to be now

Al at lest the mk2 was a easy box to remove even laying on your back not like modern fwd stuff and it had the more sensible clutch cable
Didn’t put a clutch in wrong but made many other mistakes some I had to own up to some I rectified without anyone knowing.

I had absolute mare just recently trying to bleed the clutch on a 2.4

Also questioned myself if I put the clutch the right way around

I have reverse bled , pressure bled , vacuum bled , two man bled , you name it have done it
Always seems to have air in it…

It’s not to bad at the moment goes into gear ok now..
Pedal is a bit low , you only have to lift your foot about an inch…

So try the different bleeding methods and see what works best…

I would pay someone if they could guarantee it would work…

Good luck
