what horse power?
how many miles has it done?
what codes are you getting?
possibly worn timing chain causing cam and crank not to sync
when you say starter winds on do you mean its not catching and not turning engine over and just spinning or its turning over but not starting ???

Fuel supply - poor electrical/tronic connection. Could be both.

Good advice so far just to add, may be worth checking out earth points too.

As previously mentioned though get it plugged in and see what information you get to go off and let us know.

EGR valve stuck open or closed won't stop the engine starting. They don't need glow plugs to start either...unless ambient temps are -5C or below.

When were the learns last done..?? Euro-4 pumps rarely fail.

Have you 300 bar at cranking (to add to knobbys last post).

You need to get forscan software onto it and see what’s happening.

Its a service procedure which is often overlooked ! Knobby will explain better than I, its often where we start if things are a miss with idle / running / starting issues.
