mk 6 propshaft bearings problem. seem to be wrong size

Postby marc1234567 » Sat Mar 14, 2026 7:42 pm

I am trying to do a mk6 2002 chassi cab propshaft bearings. the ones i ordered are 30mm. they seem to be too small. am away from the prop now but will measure later or tomorrow. just wondering if anyone knows anything about there being different propshaft bearing sizes. i did a bearing on this van before and don't remember a problem like this. the one i am doing is the one closest to gearbox. havent got to the centre one yet. presuming all the same.
I see some mk5 that are 45mm

Re: Mk8 RWD rear wheel bearings, grease or not?

The Mk7 is more similar to the Mk6 than the Mk5.

The Mk7 has two different prop bearing sizes.
30mm or 35mm
The larger tend to be on the heavier bigger vans. So I'd say a chassis cab would likely be the bigger option.

I do have a note of the prop shaft tube measurements at the workshop as there're two different diameters of tube which denotes the centre bearing size.
Can't remember exactly what they are from memory right now I'm afraid.

thanks sir. helpful to know that there are larger sizes and i am not somehow going mad.

i will go and measure . 35mm sounds plausible i guess.. they came with 2 what look like covers to stop dust , that actuall went onto the saft but not the bearing.

those covers , they dont have to be crimped on or anything do they? they didnt fit snuggly on the bearing .

I think i have been dumb.

i measured and was more like 40, was hard to measure. then i thought, what has probably happened is i have left the inner part on. is it called inner chase or chaser?

it is concave. so the ballbearings fit in there i think. so i have only removed the outer part.

very annoying..

Yes looks like you've left the inner "race"(if you're asking me) on the shaft.
Remove that and check your bearing fit.

As for the dust seal ring, the should be fixed to the shaft, if a bit loose you can give the inside a wee "tweek" (technical term) so it is a push fit onto the shaft. It doesn't have to be a press fit but shouldn't be loose.

thanks i think the dust seal ring does fit on the shaft. the one in photo probably on too far.
