Coolant/Degasser consumable Caps

Postby VentaBlack » Sun Mar 15, 2026 10:03 am

Hello.
MOT season again for me.
And yet another coolant expansion tank Cap stuck in orifice.
I've gotten previous one out using the destructive method.
But it baffles me how this much vacuum occurs, and is there an old-style metal cap option hidden on the market?

I've not had this problem before but if you can't pull the remnants of the cap out with pliers etc, then perhaps try removing the header tank. This will eliminate any vacuum but if that doesn't help, you could apply internal pressure from an airline or electric tyre pump or something. Sounds like it's either too tight a fit or the seal has expanded making it jam.

Get a genuine Ford cap...the one in the pic is not genuine.

Thanks for replies.

I can get them out when they get stuck in, but it's a destructive process.

Hence, buy a few cheap ones and keep in GB.

The Ford site is a Troglodytes nightmare, classic "computer says No" programming. . . .

I'll buy a Ford one, see how long it lasts.

The one in my 2008 2.4 140 is the original, so 18 years old and still works fine.
