Dana Axle Oil Seals?

Postby JRHartley » Wed Mar 18, 2026 9:16 pm

Im going to do brake shoes & slaves cylinders on a Mk6 Dana axle ( the one with the large nut holding the hub on), is it worth doing the oil seals at the same time, are they prone to leaking? The axle is unknown mileage wise. thanks

If they're not leaking I'd be inclined to leave them.

But if you're removing the hub to do the brakes, I'd recommend replacing the seal.
It's never great trying to reuse an old seal.

Biggest issue is that the original seal will have worn a groove in the axle surface and it can be hit or miss if it seals or leaks after you reassemble.

If in doubt there are things called "speedy sleeves" that are designed to refresh worn seal journals, if there's a deep grove fill it with chemical metal and smooth back. before fitting the sleeve coat the surface in locktite retainer.
They don't like air under them, they get hot and burn seals if they can't dissipate heat.

I think leaving them is a good idea, thanks!
If the shaft has no groove worn into it, that would suggest not high mileage which it is, so leave it
