Mk6 thermostat.

Postby rotory » Thu Mar 26, 2026 4:04 pm

Hi all.
I’ve just recieved a thermostat housing for my MK6 2.4 TDDi (photo) should the small stack pipe on the top of the unit be clear. I’ve tried blowing through it and nothing passes through. I thought it should act as a thermal vent and allows some fluid to pass through to the tank.

Its maybe possible to run a drill down it to open it up as it’s a dual usage for one without a pipe to the header tank not on a transit but I’ve had this on other assemblies before but I would check with the supplier first

Thank you, I do have a return pipe to the tank,so it probably needs a drill through.

Does the old unit have a hole in it? If it does, is it full diameter or restricted? I'd make the new one the same as the one that came off. It makes sense to drill it through, but sometimes there is a restriction for a reason. I'm sure Knobby (font of all knowledge) will know 8)

Hi camper, I haven’t removed the old one yet. Just got the new one and noticed the blockage in the stack pipe. The blockage is about 25mm down the pipe, sounds metallic when I push a small drill into it.

Hi all,
Just removed the old one and it has a similar blockage. There must be some sort of NRV or thermal valve in there.
Thank you

I could be wrong, had a look at close up pics on ebay, .. looks like its got a blanking plug screwed into it with very tiny square drive to take it out .

Hi,
I shall wander to the shed and take a look at the old one.

Had a look at the old one, seems to be a solid one piece stack pipe. Tried to remove the centre but no luck. It must be some sort of thermal relief valve in there, old one is an original Ford part. Thank you anyway.
