Probably a dead reverse switch or poorly wiring..

Is it a Mk6 or Mk7..5 or 6 speed..?? FWD or RWD..?? You don't actually say what you have.

Fuse box looks like Mk7.

The reverse light switch is a common fault. The switch is located near the back of the gearbox on the near-side high up (if it's RWD) Quick check is to unplug the wiring from the switch. There are only 2 wires. Bridge the wires and then turn the ignition on. If the reverse lights come on, the switch is faulty. They are inexpensive and readily available. They simply screw in. Do check the new one against the old one as there is more than one length.
