Mk6 smokey and the bandit

Postby Rich724 » Sat Jun 13, 2026 12:06 pm

New here so hello all.

I know this has probably been in a few threads but after some advice. Suprise suprise. Lol.

Mk6 2.4L transit.
The engine has been swappe out with another. But not knowing anything about it.
Started smoking heavy grey ish smoke, then lost all power on the throttle. So usual route of swapping the egr for a new one.
Went for a test run and half mile down the road smoke came back. And loss of lower.
Took the rubber hose off the egr and ran the engine, white smoke from rubber hose and still smoke from exhaust.
So now my thoughts seem to go along the turbo route with the loss of power.
Would my thinking be along the right lines. Or am I looking towards fuel pump?
The white smoke is leading me towards turbo and seals for oil. And smoke from exhaust.
I've not blanked off the egr, that will be my next test along with opening up the turbo in and out to check for oil in pipes. And play in the turbo.
It's the grey smoke that's throwing me off. Black is easy and white is easy. Bit grey???
Really struggles with power, just has nothing there. Not even enough to lift the clutch all the way without stalling.
Tickover if fine. Sounds sweet as a nut.
No access to diagnostic tools so doing this the old school way.

Anyway much help in pointing out Aby fault finding methods would be most appreciated.

perhaps - dump valve .. playing up .. sticky corroded rusted or actuator diaphragm that operates it perforated

Is the turbo actuator actually moving..?? Sometimes the little link rod can snap off at the pivot point or the wastegate itself can seize inside the housing.

As mentioned by metalworker0, the actuator diaphragm may not be happy.

Thanks for the replies.

I will jump.on it again tommorow after work. And check it all before I strip the turbo apart.

If I can at least diagnose the problem it's half the battle.

Engine code D2FB.

Havnt looked close enough at the injection side to determine ddi or dci.

Not got that far with it yet.
Was told egr so that's what I replaced. But no effect on smoke.

some signs that turbine blade is contacting the bore , has wear and erosion on the leading edge of blades, oily ,i don't know.... note there will be play because it has plain bearings, the oil pressure to it takes this up , i say looking at the blades though, it is time to replace.

now you have to seek advice .. for cartridge or whole thing

Thanks. I was thinking replace. Oil didn't come pouring out the pipework. But was enough to cover my finger with excess.

So maybe thinking it's burning oil through turbo. Exhaust side was black dry soot.

No water in oil (milky) and no oil in water. So not leaning towards head gasket. And with the complete lack of power. Not even being able to pull away without fettling the clutch. Even then as soon as clutch up engine stalls out. Along with the grey ish smoke.

So now looking for turbo. Seen cartridge replacements. Anyone done these? Or can I get to the seal and just replace that.

Not many scrap yards around my area any more.

Thanks again all.

So put turbo back on but didn't connect to inlet manifold. Left exposed and run. Still got smoke from exhaust. Small amount of oil when shut off around the fins.

Wil oil filler cap off some pressure coming out but nothing I would call drastic. Just steady pressure with fumes.

It's got me scratching my head a bit. If it was taking oil in through inlet I would expect to see more from turbo.

So next is blanking off egr pipe just to see if it's coming back through. But engine hasn't got hot enough to open it up, or does it open anyway? Electric and vacuum egr.

Also. When should the waste gate move? So far engine revs up or on off watse gate hasn't moved as yet.
