Injector knock

Postby shonkers » Fri Jul 10, 2026 9:54 am

Hi guys, 2001 mk6 2.4tddi iv’e just started getting a loud knocking sometimes you can hear it at idle but definately when you barely blip the throttle but it goes away when you increase revs, also the whole engine noise seems louder, iv’e never heard an injector knocking before so am just guessing although it does sound similar on youtube, the old girl has served me well up to now and would love to keep her going any ideas? i’ll try and post a vid that should help diagnosis

Don't know how to put a vid on the forum.

Vids are different formats. some are. MTS MTS needs to be changed to .mp4. Upload to youtube it'll then be .mp4 when uploaded to youtube ( there are video players that convert) in youtube you'll find a - link - it can be sent to whoever. The link can be put in the forum post. The link is a URL.

Just tried an .MTS vid - it did not add to the post.
2012 2.2 TDCi MK 7 E 5 100 HP - 350 3.5 tonne XLWB RWD H3 L4 Duratorq 2.2L CR TC 14 DSL 100/125 PS

What fault codes are you getting..?? Is the glow plug light flashing..??

Timing solenoid failure is a common cause of diesel knock in the TDDi's.

Finally got vid up, he said he looked at live data but nothing obvious came up as it didn’t pick up any injector offsets, but it did point to a timing issue also there was an engine light showing but not on the dash, he can’t remember what the codes were but can do it again monday, how do you test the timing solenoid or do you just swap it out and is it easy to get to?

It's similar to when the ignition timing is out on a petrol engine. Diesel injection timing is very important, too early or too late and you get poor fuel ignition and the result is usually detonation/knock, poor performance and poor fuel economy. The timing solenoid is what ensures the primary and main fuel is injected at the correct times. Tiny variations depending on load, rpm and throttle position are carried out by the PCM and sent to the timing solenoid and it then adjusts the injection timing accordingly..

In the TDCi engines this is all controlled electronically by the PCM/injectors and this is why the later Mk7 engines are generally a bit quieter.

There's a lot more to it than that and I'm sure I've missed things, but that's the general idea...a diesel specialist would be able to explain much better than myself....I'm just a layman when it comes to this stuff.

Ok thanks knobby ..
So i've done some delving and it brings up codes - that's if a 2001 has the codes
P0149: Fuel Timing Error. The solenoid cannot adjust the pump timing correctly.
P1564: Injection Pump Control Module Requesting Reduced Fueling.

also said slack timing chain can cause this ... jumped timing chain?

These timing solenoids, for a good make are £245 exchange
So you want to be sure before you replace it

2001 - 25 years old - what's the mileage or how many since it was last rebuilt or had timing a chain swap

You won't see any injector or timing info on a TDDI as they're (Turbo Diesel Direct Injection) so mechanical pump and injectors.
Mk6 is also not OBD2 compliant so many newer diagnostics will not communicate with the limited electronics that are on those vans.

Aah thanks for that useful info metalworker and knobby, will find out codes later and try different scan tool, good vid exactly what mine is doing and down on power, don’t think it’s the chain ‘cos i think you would be able to hear it surely? It’s just gone over 200,000 miles and i think it’s had a new pump before ‘cos there’s a thread on this forum titled ‘i bought the minibus from hell’ where he had loads of issues but we never got to find out the ending and the pump does look quite clean, cheerz mdeerz
