Mk6 Transit axle end float again!!

Sorry I know this has been asked a 100 times and I have read all the posts...

I have a MK6 RWD single rear wheel dum brake with ABS..

I have approx 2mm of end float on the osr wheel and 1mm on the nsr

I bought a spare axle to swap straight but that has the same play but on the opposite wheel.

I have taken the back cover of the spare axle and that has the DiSH cage fitted, but I cant see any shims

The way I understand it, you cant remove and refit the DiSH.

and they are not available anywhere now.

What are my options...

just for others - do you mean diff cage ?

think there will be washers some have adjusters that you turn and lock in place

also you have the crush sleeve on the pinion

Hi Mark Thank you for replying.. Ford called it a DiSH cage "DiSH cage" stands for Differential Shim Holder. It clip into the centre of the diff from both sides and holds the shims in place

I did look up dish cage as id never heard it before .. no results showed .. hence i ask if a spelling mistake

even when i put into google

Thanks Mark. I wish I had never heard of it either.. a garage has quoted.me £500 to.do the rear bearings.. but I believe you have to take the driveshafts out to do the bearings, and you cant do that without removing the DiSH. Then you cant replace it.. all the google.post I have read on end float suggest fitting shims, and that its not the bearings.

i think they are blinding you with spurious info, making the job look more complicated than it is.

yep, you take out the c-clips .. then the axles should come out .. i don't think you have to disturb the shim washers doing this, i could be wrong .. i don't know all diffs

Thanks Mark. But you cant get to the c clip to remove it because the DiSH was designed by Ford to stop the c clip being removed/falling out

Does not actually say what the limits are.

note: this is only for the c-clip tightness by the looks of things .. not for wear on the diff or taking up wear in the diff

i would imagine you take the drive shafts out and put them back again with the same shims ...
m this info may be for initial factory set up? . or the fix for a recall.?

The bottom of the 3 links has the original recall info
Read the different stages of repair,if the end float is too great you replace the driveshaft itself.
Below that,you fit relevant shims and cage
If No real play,just fit cage.(they all had cage fitted regardless)


Part numbers are listed,just google or eBay etc search the part numbers
There are even some new old stock shims listed on eBay

And the quoted price to do bearings,
As you’ve said,they have NO effect on any endfloat you have at the rear hubs,so unless they are noisy.theres no real need or benefit from replacing them

Can any one tell me if my van has had the recall done, I phoned Ford today and was told as it was before I owned the van, they couldn't tell me!!

And if it has had the "cage" fitted does that mean the c clip can never fall.out, and I cant loose the half shaft and wheel
