pilot learn fail error code 80

Postby spg handyman » Mon Aug 24, 2026 2:39 pm

Hi All
2.4 duratorq rwd 2011

Had a rough idle at times not hunting more like a missfire mainly on start up, hot or cold, no smoke .
Did a pump learn went through fine .
but pilot learn failed with error code 80 ( idle incorrect)
i noticed when it was raising the idle in the learn programe the revs shot up ,rather than the normal fast idle ,causing the error code .
Also intermitent unable to read live data on forscan intermitently, but ok on my obd reader.
Any ideas?
TIA

What injector compensation numbers are you getting..??

When was the fuel filter last replaced..??

Haven't had the van long . Don't think the filter has done many mile . Will have to check the injector compensation .
Cheers

Is it a genuine fuel filter ? Mine failed until I fitted a genuine Ford filter even though it was only 6k miles old. A new genuine Filter and it worked first time.

Cylinder balance not looking good . I think I need to do a leak off test .
CylBal_1: -1.590 mgCylBal_2: -1.200 mgCylBal_3: 1.013 mgCylBal_4: 1.766 mg

What sort of levels should I be looking for ?

Just done a leak off test .
Cyl 1 = 42mil
Cyl 2= 19
Cyl 3= 15
Cyl 4= 20

Looks like injector 1 has seen better days

What's the best way to bleed the full system ,as they don't have a primer .
Going to change the filter while I'm at it .

Ideally they should be +/- 1.0.... and "in theory" when all added together should equal close to zero, yours is close to that at -0.011mg.

When they are more than -1.0 or +1.0 the system can often struggle to compensate and may fail the learns....although we have seen worse and they seem to run fine once the learns are done successfully. I suspect big swings from minus to plus would be the killer.

Limits for the Euro-4 is 20-40ml after 4 mins at idle with engine warmed up.

Mk7 Euro-4's are self priming/bleeding....once the engine is running the system should expell minor amounts of air through injectors, any residual air in the pump is sent back to the tank via the pump by-pass system. These fuel pumps can supply many times what the engine will ever need, all excess is returned to tank via the fuel cooler behind the tank.

That makes sense.
Looking at the leak off test ,no 1 cyl a 42ml and the others at 15 to 20 after 2min . I think I need a new injector on that cylinder.
Thanks for your help .
