Mk7 overheated - new head/engine?

Postby sjs205 » Fri Oct 02, 2026 8:37 pm

Hello all, it's been a while since I've posted. Recently my mk7, 2.2 had a water leak and ran dry. I didn't realise this for quite some time and so I think it's blown either the head, or the gasket - I relised this on the motorway, pulled over and filled her up - I never knew you had to wait for it to cool down first - i do now... anyway, I fixed the pipe, when I put water in the system it bubbles up through the reservoir. I like the van but it's had some welding done but it's still a nice van and I quite like it so I'm just questioning whether it's worth either getting a new engine or getting a new head for it so I'd love to hear your thoughts on that?

Many thanks all.

These engines are unlikely to blow a head gasket, possible, but unlikely....but a cracked head might be a possibility.....cold water in a hot head is not a good idea. Also possible the EGR cooler is at fault and causing your bubbles...best to get it properly diagnosed before condemning the head....might be a relatively easy fix.

they usually burst hoses when water pump drive is faulty and coolant not circulating

unusual for mk7s to overheat as they're supposed to cut out before damage occurs

Yes, I've heard a few people saying this about them shutting down or going into limp mode when over-heating - the problem is that if there isn't any water the temp gauge (which is a water temp gauge) says cold... when I plugged the van in afterwards, it did show an overheating error, but i guess this would have been related to the engine oil - which clearly didn't cause the engine to go into limp mode, or warn me of impending doom!

Unless yours is a Euro-5, (you don't actually say which you have), which do have a "water sensing" temp guage...the Euro-4's have a cyl head temp sensor, which obviously senses the temp of the aluminium cyl head and the amount of coolant in them is irrelevant..

They don't have an oil temp sensor.
