Gearbox rebuild

My gearebox has seemed to be giving me problems since changing engine, it felt like the diff was twitching slightly and second gear has totally ducked up, and now when turning tightly with any power the steering goes mental, evenwheelspinning isnt the same!
now theres gearbox oil seeping from it and a load ticking noise coming from it in all gears.

i have a mondeo gearbox with a smashed diff housing, was wondering if i could rebuild my box with parts from the mondeo box, they look the same apart from the selector on top
one thing i noticed is the mondeo box doesn't seem to be as heavy as the transit one

have stripped both gearboxes today, was hoping i could just bolt the mondeo box onto the transit bell housing, but there quite different

as i thought the diff on my box wasn't in good shape



the problem i have is, i would like the 3.2ratio from the mondeo box, but is the difference from the transit 4.5ratio just made by the diff

you can see the mondeo one is smaller and not as deep so will only go into the mondeo casing.



the only thing i cant understand is even though the diffs are different sizes, what it runs off is the same circumfrance size (apart from different amount of teeth)





so the driveshaft outputs must be at a different orintation but that would put the output, out with the drive shaft bracket on the block

does anyone know of a good suppliers of the parts i'd need to repair the diffs.

yeah a lot more structual supports, theres a hell of a difference in weight cos of this.

i'm going to get a six speed box tommorow and make it fit

hopefully then at 70-80 engine will be revving below 2k

I think the difference is the Transit box is VXT-75 and the Mondeo is MTX-75 similar, but not quite

what is the model of 6peed mk7 fwd

6 speed mondeo is MMT6 in the 2001 shape or 2007 shape is either MMT6 or M66

6 speed mk7 (fwd) transit is VMT6

i noticed today that the slave cylinder must have popped apart when i removed the box.

the spring and thrust bearing part have come off but the bottom of this has a seal that goes into the ''cylinder'' which i can't get back in

but i cant see why its come apart i'm just wondering if it has been too short and thats why my biting point has been on the floor.
it is an LUK slave, but not from ford. the motorfactors i got it from said there was only 2 different ones, and the other type they had was the same one as my 75ps standard clutch, slave.

any point going 6 speed if output on Gearbox is 1 to 1 ...... just a thought, ideal if you going to do a lot of towing as it will bring down gear ratio..

do you mean 1-1 as in the RWD 6 speed box?

i'm going to get the 6 speed mondeo box so that i can bring revs down at motorway speeds

i may just fit the 5 speed mondeo box now,
can anyone confirm these calculations

3.5k @ 105mph = 33.3mph/1k

2.6k @ 80mph = 32.5/1k

1.1k @ 30mph = 36.67/1k

average 33mph/1k= 3.3mph per 100 revs


Final drive ratio = 1000:4540

=10 x 3.3= 3.3;1 Engine speed to road speed with current wheels 16''s.



at 4540 engine revs gearbox is turning = 1000 revs.= 149.82MPH

@ 2270 engine revs gearbox is turning = 500 REVS = 74.91MPH

4.8k red line @ 158mph



with 3.41 ratio box (MONDEO)

@ 3410 engine revs gearbox is turning = 1000 revs = 149mph


@ 1705 engine revs gearbox turning = 500 revs = 74.91mph

74.91 / 1705 x 100 = 4.39

average 44mph/1k = 4.4 mph per 100 revs.

and does anyone know what (4.071/2.850) ratio means for the six speed mondeo

now waiting for s speed mmt6 box to arrive, but still dont know what final drive ratio it has, etis says 4.071/2.850

if i can get the engine to 4k in 6th it will be doing 212.5 mph if diff ratio is 2.85

if it is 4.071 it will be doing 148.7mph

so takin the info cocunut posted for the vmt6

5th and 6th will be 2.85 ratio. 212mph @ 4k

WTF i'll probably have to increase the power a lot for this new gearbox to be any good.


or if i go back to 15'' rims will drop the speed to 190mph

Did you use the box out of van the tdci lump came out of or did you use your original box, I read somewhere yesterday that the higher power models have stronger boxes, apparently thats why you can't get a 130ps with the 4.23 ratio.
