Waxoil??

Hi, I have a 54 reg ex Royal Mail Transit. I want the van to last quite a few years as I am slowly converting it into a van that I can live in for weekends away. As I don't use it everyday, the mechanics should last for years, but what about the bodywork?

I am thinking about Waxoiling it underneath and in the wheel arches. I have never done this before to a vehicle. Has anybody got any tips for doing this to a Transit?

Will it make a difference to stopping it rusting in the long term?

How long does it last? Do you have to re-do it every so many years?

Does it come off if you wash the underside of the van with a jet washer?

The van already has a few rust bubbles coming through on the sills, in particullar under the drivers door sill. So I don't want it to get any worse. If I do this, will it be worth the effort, or should I just not bother, wash it underneath regularly and accept that in 5 or 6 years time its going to be a rust bucket?!!

Any advice appreciated. My T reg Mondeo didn't have a spec of rust on it when i got rid of it. I can't believe that at 4 years old my van is starting to show signs already!.

how much would you need to do say a LWb and what is the best method of application ?

when i do my fire van i'll take pics and do a proper how too - just waiting for the weather to warm a bit as its best done in the summer or at least on a dry day

cant remember how many tins ive got but i use a shultz gun with a wax pipe applicator so you can get right into the chassis - it needs a compressor to do it any tank compressor will do it but with a small one it takes ages to recharge after each spray

basically you poke it into any holes in the chassis you can find and blast as much wax in as you can - too much wont harm anything

with the underseal brush off any loose rust and spray it on

if i ever for some strange reason bought a brand new van, i would love to waxoil the lot, then it would last forever

I intend doing my van roads had just been heavily salted when I drove it home.

Give the underside of the van a thorough wash off to get rid of ALL traces of salt.
Let the underside of the van dry thoroughly - even in all the joinjs/spot welds etc.

I generaly use a Schutz gun with extended end, on an airline first coat gets a diluted coat of waxoyl, paying particular attention to welds and inside chassis members not forgetting the sills etc (the diluted mix flows into the panel seams much better than undiluted waxoyl)

After this has dried/gathered a bit of dust - say 2 or 3 weeks another coat of undiluted waxoyl goes on.

Expect the waxoyl to not last long on high abrasion areas like under wheel arches but rust normally starts on the inside anyway.

Also there is a small independant oil blender in Darlington called Smith & Allan who blend their own oils, their own brand Waxoil is half the price of the usual stuff & much better (I have no links to them other than they supply good stuff at a sensible price).

I just bought some the other day - about £13 + vat for 5ltrs
5ltr of 2T oil (mix with fuel) about £17 +vat
They do their own brand of WD40 as well (5 ltr free 'cos I asked for a discount!).

Used their engine/gear/hyd oil for years.

I was looking in Halford yesterday. They had it in 5 litre tins I think. They also has a spray pump thing that you attach via a pipe to the tin. So is it just a case of doing the following?:

1. Thourghly wash and dry the underside,

2. Spray on a diluted layer of waxoil, (diluted with what?)

3. Afew weeks later spray on another layer. (I presume you can use the van and get it dirty in these few weeks, and then give it another good wash before applying the top coat?)

the problem with the pump sprayer your on about is bascally they are crap

ok for doing inside doors and stuff like that but for getting inside the chassis rails they just arnt powerful enough

ive got a little 25ltr compresser 100psi dont know what cfm but very low - that will do the job ok just takes a while to charge up between each 20 seconds of spraying -but at least it gets into the chassis rails

the waxoil i use is dinitrol and the underseal is 3M i'll post the exact type later

I dilute the Waxoyl with WD40 type of product (although they recommend white spirit).

If there has been no salt on the road & the underside is not caked with mud etc, I wouldn't bother washing again, a light hose down would do if you felt the need.

I'm not saying that this is the way to do it, just the way I do it.

this is the underseal i use 08861 3M Body Schutz 1Ltr you need a compressor and a shultz gun to apply it, i like this stuff as it stays tacky and doesnt chip off it's £3.28 a tin



to do a transit swb you'd need 8+ tins (more for a lwb), you use almost 1 for each wheel arch
