Knock/Vibration at Tickover

Hey there. Was wondering if anyone can help me. On my 2001 2.4l Transit MWB MR at nearly 60,000 miles I am experiencing a metallic knocking sound at tickover, sort of twice a second. If revved fairly hard and allowed to return to idle the noise goes away for a bit (and when you turn the radio up ). Does anyone know what this could be? I'm thinking either transmission or engine mounts and bushes?

I also get a constant vibration, most noticeable at about 60mph, and it's felt throughout the van. I think this may also be transmission so any ideas on bits that could have worn by now or any known problems?

Hey can you give me a little more in depth explanation

I've noticed it more when the van has more of a load on so was also thinking it could be the UJ's on the drive shaft as it's RWD??

I'm with Geoff on this one, my money is on excessive undamped movement of the flywheel's secondary mass.

Time to have the transmission out and inspect the flywheel and clutch.

You'll probably find that the clutch is over ½ worn and the secondary mass will have more than 7degrees of free movement (thats 5 teeth on the ring gear)

Expect a bill from a dealer on the wrong side of £500

I had the clutch and flywheel replaced about 25,000 - 30,000 miles ago, nearly 3 years ago and that was main dealer. Inc all new brakes too and fitting cost me £700 ish. So id imagine just the flywheel and clutch will be under £500 specially if I can just source the parts.

I had it replaced last time for shuddering when reversing, didn't think it could be linked with this too but i'll have to check it out myself.

Took it too the Ford Garage today, one of the technicians went out with me and drove the transit. First of all he agreed that it could be the flywheel as there is a problem with them... But we were going down the motorway doing about 60 and he swerved from side to side (never thought of doing before) and when turning to the left the vibration went away. Turns out it was the drivers side front wheel bearing that was worn, it's amazing how quiet it is without the vibration! I can hear the radio again now!

So cheers to you all, wasn't too expensive after all
