2003 ford tourneo 8 seater

Postby mrtaximan » Fri Apr 15, 2005 10:36 am

hi all, this is my first post to this forum,My tourneo tdci has developed a problem that gives all the symptoms of a failed thermostat ie start from cold slowly heats up over about 2-3 miles and then goes into the red.
The top hose gets hot but the bottom stays cold and the heater stays cold as well.
As a temporary action i removed the thermastat and refilled with coolant but the engine still will not appear to circulate the coolant and if you road test the car the gauge goes to hot when you drive and then cools down when you idle(according to the gauge). The hoses still stay top-hot-bottom cold.
Three things spring to mind here,Air lock in engine/engine does not like running without stat fitted/water pump failure(all belts ok).
Is there a known issue on this engine regarding cooling or a bleeding proceedure to follow?
The engine has done 72000 mls and has been serviced every 6,000 mls ford recomend 15,000 mls. help please.

As far as any known problems im not sure - never owned one (yet!!)!! But:-

What about mabe a blocked radiator??

Try disconnecting top and bottom hoses and running a hosepipe through it!

I once has a blocked radiator (not fully) i took it off filled it with harpic - (im sure you can get propper stuff) shook it about - and the crap that came out of it!!

Worth a try at least its free!!! :D

Has the engine actually overheated? I don't know if this affects later models, but there can be an overreading of the temp gauge due to the voltage regulator behind the dash failing. I have had this in the Mk2, and if you thump the dash in the right place the gauge goes back down!!

ford tourneo

Postby mrtaximan » Fri Apr 15, 2005 5:19 pm

hi all now i know whats wrong, just got the phone call from dagenham motors.there is a drive shaft from the power steering pump that drives the water pump.according to fords this is the part that has failed and the part wont be in until tuesday!!!.can anyone give any info on this as it seems a bloody stupid way to drive a water pump,or has any of you transit buffs got a diagram showing this part. Also i am not convinced ford are telling the truth as i have had a run in with ford service before.mark.

Got to be honest, it does sound like a wierd way to power a water pump, but what would I know, I have never had anything to do with power steering?! I have the forearms to prove it.................................
Hope you get it sorted and back to work :D

ford tourneo water pump

Postby mrtaximan » Sat Apr 16, 2005 9:25 am

does anyone know if this water pump/power steering pump problem is a knowm fault with these vans or does it for some reason only affect tourneos!!!
I know i sounds daft but some tourneos like mine have a heater fitted in the back above the axle and water has to be circulated from the engine making the pump work harder and cause the shaft to break.Food for thought.?mark.
