Buying a mk6 - couple of Q's

Postby Mark 17 » Tue May 16, 2006 11:46 pm

Hi - got a couple of Q's, hope you can help.
Changing my N reg mk5 in a few days for a mk6 on an X or Y plate. I definatley want a swb low roof but I am a bit behind the door when it comes to the model spec on these Transits. :?
Do they all have PAS & central locking as standard?
Are they all powered by the 2.0 TD engine?
What is the difference between T150, T260, T280 ect?
Any advice would be very much appriciated.
Thanks guys.

P/Steering standard C/Locking standard but some grey imports no R/Control.

2.0 engine FWD 75PS/100PS (T150?) T260=80 T280=100 T300=120 equiv.

2.4 engine RWD 90PS T330=150 equiv. (16"Wheels) Higher floor inside like MK5 .

And don't worry too much about the ultra thin body panels, it's normal
Any rust will result in a hole in no time.

Early fwd s had a problem with air getting in at the fuel filter assy resulting in non starter. Should be cured by now.

RWD s wheel nuts used to come loose  So all of these should have been sorted. You may even see those little bright green plastic arrows on the nuts to allow a quick visual check

And ignore my signiture as it doesn't apply to a MK6
Hope this helps :!:

:D Thanks andyg. very helpful - I'm begining to get a better picture now about the mk6 and I am looking forward to getting my hands on one.

Gonna be a shame to have to let my mk5 go tho. It's been a great work horse and only let me down once - last week. The near side wheel bearing went and welded itself to the stub axle :( . Replaced both sides to be sure.

Thanks again mate. :D

This info. only applies to the early models as you requested :!:

The range gets much  much more complicated as Ford struggles to hold on to it's customers defecting :(

They don't seem to look after the custom ers they have

Nowa days you can even have a rwd T260 :?

early fwds also seem to have g/box problem? where ya loose 2nd and reverse 3 people i know with x plates have this problem one has had 3 new boxes and still it goes wrong :x :x :?
You only need two tools in life: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

I agree :D

Also check those front discs  I know for a fact that if they need replacing on these fwd, can cost a fortune 'cause you end up having to change the bearings as well
One that I know simply wanted new discs and pads :) Bill ended up at nearly £500

Thanks for that advice everyone.
I am a black cab licence holder in Manchester and have driven a couple of TX2 taxis which have the duratorque engine in them - same as the mk6 transit I am told?
We had a hell of a lot of mither with fuel starvation and pump probs even on brand new cabs with less than 4k miles on the clock and TX2's were breaking down all the time. In and out of the dealer with nobody knowing what was really going wrong.
In the end it turned out that LTI (taxi manufacturer) were having to modify the fuel pump to make the damn thing fit into the engine bay of a taxi and it caused havoc with the whole fuel delivery set up.
Did the early mk6's have any fuel probs similar to this?

The 2.0Litre fwd had problems- turned out to be the fuel filter assy.

I thought the cabs used the 2.4Litre 90PS :?: With a nice little japanese autobox bolted to the back of it :?:

I know that the Ldv s that Harrow council bought, have the 2.0Litre 75PS engine mounted north-south :o (and someone ordering ticked off rear windows (which had to be blocked) and Aircon  They boobed on some other stuff but can't remember :? I think they forgot to wire in the loading space lights- you might think that's alright easy enough, until you find out they had the loading bays all fibreglass lined
