Well my 2.4 90 tddi didn't even last it's first week even after all the tlc it's had  got a call today that the van has lost power sounds like it's missing and smoking! i wasn't nowhere near it so the guys had to carry on! had a look this eve and this is what it's doing! very tappy top endy but not diesel knocky, hesitant and sluggish sounds as if missing, blueish smoke, also on tickover it sounds like it's pumping out of the inlet but get it to about 60mph and it seems to smooth off and run ok! i've whipped the rocker cover off to see if the timing has jumped but i cant see any damage and all looks ok! could it still have jumped? secondly i'm thinking pump?or thirdly how about a pistonring? bloody thing cheers

i may be wrong but it sounds possable u have an injecter going or worse a piston goning further testing to be done would include leakoff test on injecters and compression test on engine

good luck

Timing could have just jumped 1 tooth

But as the others say check simple stuff 1st like valve springs, rockers etc then I'd go for the compression test and see what that brings up :!:

Also check the cam to see if any of the lobes have cracked and are spinning on the cam

If it has jumped one tooth will it have damaged anything? i'm guessing the timing can only be checked with the front cover off?

I was on a nice long roadtest today, so wasn't in the workshop for much 8)

If it has jumped 1 or 2 teeth very unlikely it would damaged anything :D but thinking again the earlier engines didn't jump :!: but it would have to have the front cover off to check but you could check the crank to pump timing and if that's slightly out then that's a good indication the timing has jumped  but do check the basics before ripping it apart to much

I must admit are BBQ are good tons and tons of meat and the odd one or three broken cases
I've never had a front cover off yet! Can it be done without pulling the whole front off? I know this will give more room but I don't want to leave it where it is with all the front off if that makes sense :? Looks as though there's room if I drop the rad out ! :D
