Gear selection troubles.

Postby ed4002 » Tue May 30, 2006 4:05 pm

Hello everyone,

Good to read through new forum, lloks like some knowledeable people about to talk too.

I just bought a 53 plate T100 dropside transit and it seems like it's going to be a reliable truck, Just like my old R reg.

Has done 39000 miles, 2000 of which I have done and it seems to drive ok, high revs at motorway speeds but I dont need to go faster.

Only thing is it is quite hard to get into reverse gear when stopped. I had similar problem on my old transit when the clutch was about to go. Adjusting the clutch, and changing the driver fixed that  . But I can't find the adjuster on this one. What should I look for? What else could it be.

It's a hydraulic clutch, so no adjuster to be found.

Your description of the van would have me think it's a 100T*** vehicle with a front wheel drive 2.0 engine.

is the clutch pedal level with the brake pedal?

Close, But not quite

Its a Chaasis cab T350 100 with twin rear wheel drive. Its not abig problem at the moment it goes in and drives fine in all gears, I do mostly motor way so the clutch should last a bit longer (if thats what the problem is).

I remember on my old truck the gearbox oil became low which caused a similar problem, can I check that? I looked on the gearbox but I could see the fill port on the passenger side only the drain port at the bottom

Does it say "90 T 350" under the wing mirror :?:
That'll be a 2.4 rear wheel drive :? Where are you getting the "100" from :?:

It says 100 T350 or is it T350 100.

Its the 100hp version anyway.

Hyrdaulic clutch

Postby ed4002 » Tue May 30, 2006 10:34 pm

So, Hydraulic. That would meen it needs fluid to operate, is there a holding tank for it? maybe it needs some.

Hoping my gear selections troubles are simple and can be fixed before it gets worse.

Hmmm,

I was wrong, it does say 90 not 100, like that makes a lot of difference! Or does it?

It does actually as the 100PS is usually one of the 2.0Litre engines for front wheel drive vans :D

90PS confirms you have the 2.4Litre engine rear wheel drive :D

Clutch.

Postby ed4002 » Thu Jun 01, 2006 7:28 pm

Looks like the clutch is on the way out.
Started to smell bad reversing up a small incline today.
Gonna get it to my mechanic next week to check it out.

Apart from that it's working just fine.

As Andy pointed out, the diffence between 90ps and 100ps is huge.

On the 90ps the clutch slave cylinder can be changed in under ½ hour and on the 100ps it's a 4.5hour job!

The clutch CAN smell when subjected to high loads, this doesn't always mean that there is a fault. It's a consequence of the removal of some of the nastier materials which used to be used in the friction lining.

Slipping could also be induced by a failure in the master or slave cylinders, so have your man check the system before condeming the clutch.

A good test is to place a 25mm thick block of wood on the clutch pedal stop, press the clutch down onto the block with the engine running and see if you can still get gears.....if so, the clutch is probably OK
