jumps out of 2nd gear

my mates got a transit 2.0 tddi 75bhp on a w reg. when he goes from 1st to 2nd it sometimes jumps out of 2nd. is there any known faults that cause this on these vans such as linkage/cable adjustment or do they just have weak gearboxes ?? thanks shaun

Yeah, sounds like cable adjustment to me.

If it only does it in 2nd I would have said the gearbox, but you would know better than me with the later stuff.

W is a very early reg for the fwd

I'd be looking at the cable first, the outer cables on the early ones were prone to stretching and giving selection issues when trying to get 2,4,rev

I'd start by removing the cable (grey) abd checking the crimped metal ends, if you can see the inner strands of the outer sleeve it's goosed.

if it's ok, refit it and adjust it to spec,

release the adjuster on the cables
make sure the box is in neutral
fit a locking bolt though the hole in the lever bracket
re fasten the adjusters

If selection is still bad, you need to move closer to the box

does the gear select fully if you use your hand on the linkage?
is there any slack between the detents on the gearbox selector linkage?

if so, report back and i'll give further assistance

builder friend of ours is on his 4th gearbox in his 51 reg they dont like weight those fwd box's now i see they do fwd in higher weight capacity

They're mad (Or maybe appealing to the ones that insist on FWD )
Does give you a few inches in height inside and can make a difference if you carry something specific I suppose That wouldn't go in if it was RWD

When i first got my van a couple of months ago this hapened to me , basicly its a trip down to the dealers and get a new cable £60 ish. Its pretty easy to fit once you work out how the clips attach.
I am not that mechanically minded but i did it myself no probs.

well cable seems ok, you can't push it any further into 2nd even if you disconnect the cable. i noticed the linkage goes in & out of gear really easy like the detent springs are weak ? i drove it round but couldn't get it to jump out for me. he reckons when it does it you can feel trying to push out of 2nd against your hand so sounds like the box.

the selector housing can be a problem, and can be removed from the box and repaired if needed.

the syncros don't have that much pressure on their detent springs.

is there any free play in the gear box linkage?

not really much play. owner reckons it seems to do it more when he's been driving a while. working the linkage by hand it just seems to go in & out of second too easily to me. i drove it a couple of miles banging foot on &off throttle but it wouldn't jump out. owner says when its playing up he has to drive with hand on gear stick to keep it in 2nd & he can feel it trying to push out of gear. thanks shaun

I had the same problem with my 2001 front wheel drive t300 .
took it to Busseys in norwich.

they fitted both cables plus the bit that sits under ther gear leave selector.

this cost me £265.00 but well worth the money because now its perfect plus they give me a 12 month warranty on the repair.

but yours might still be a different fault.

hi i know its not the same veichle but i had the same problem on a ford galaxy and that turned out to be a gearbox mount thought it might of been worth a check
