Fault codes?

Postby speedy » Sat Sep 02, 2006 12:33 am

Hi people....Been browsing the site for a while and recently bought my first Mk6 Transit - a 2001 T350 LWB 90PS. To be fair, although I love it , its been nothing but trouble in the 2 weks Ive owned it.....Failed alternator, then starter, then wiring fault, and now a possible EGR fault.
The engine management light came on,and the power dropped,so went to my local garage where I know a 'technician'. He plugged in the computer, and it showed an EGR System fault. Anyway,I cleaned it out,but to no avail - still the same. Took the plunge & bought a new genuine EGR unit.....This has put the dash light out,but the van is still down on power?? I took it back to the garage to have the management system reset, just in case that was the problem....Nope!! Despite the light on the dash being out,it still shows two faults  Ford say they cant help with the fault codes,so wondered if anyone on here had any ideas,on either the codes,or what my next move should be!!
The codes are PO 404 and PO 409.
HELP!!! Im running out of money to spend on the damn thing  :D

they're both EGR codes P0404 is a range/performance trouble code (blocked or leaking hose - dodgy wiring or duff EGR valve/solenoid - duff ECU) P0409 is a circuit malfunction trouble code (poor connection broken wire - duff EGR valve/solenoid or duff ECU)

tricky without scanner live readings to help but I'd start by looking for a poor wiring connection or perished pipework

hope it helps

P0409 usually comes when the vacuum flow regulator packs up.

you'll find that little dohickey screwed to the radiator fan cowl on the right hand side as you look at it.

The pipes from that unit control the amount of vacuum sent to the EGR valve.

so.....

P0409 comes when the circuit fails and causes P0404 because the sensor on the valve hasn't seen enough lift in response to the demands placed upon it.

the flow controller is known to suffer water ingress into both the connector and the internals. Pull of the 2 pin plug and look for corroded terminals and then flick the round cap off the top and look inside.
chances are it'll be green
