alternator and alarm

Postby TrafficJam » Sun Dec 16, 2012 11:59 am

Hello all fellow van drivers, I've got a connect 04 lwb t230l, one of the problems with it is the alternator or atleast the bearings in the alternator for it makes a wirring noise which increases and decreases the acceleration and decceleration (think I just made that word up)! Are the bearing replacement something I could do myself or us it a job only fit for a professional I.e a mechanic as oppose to a carpenter.

Second is the alarm, the alarm has a mind of its own, it arms ok when the lock button is pressed twice but doesn't always disarm when unlocked which at 5.30 in the morning had a proven track record of winding my neighbours up. Anyway, I unlocked the van on site the other day got in it started the engine and drove off I managed to get into third and the alarm went off. So I stopped and reset it with the key fob on the dash. I now notice when I set the alarm the hazards flash through the alarm setting sequence but there is no beeping additionally when the alarm goes off the hazards flash but there is no blaring siren "just silence" any ideas, please

no you cannot replace the alternator bearings yourself, they are an integral part of the alternator, you have 2 options, new alternator or have it re-conned although i would take the belt of it first and check the idlers as these have a habit of bearings failing in them too

Hmmm, i really havent got a clue, are you saying that it could be the bearings in the idlers as opposed to the bearings in the alternator and that it would be a good idea to check these first rather than go out an buy a new alternator?

yeah otherwise you could spend out for a new alternator only to find out it was an idler

I had a similar noise on my van for a long time, but one day it went quiet. On the M56 near Mancs airport. Pulled over to find bottom idler pulley gone. I'd check that as the resulting damage was circa £150 to repair and the lower idler pulley was only in the £20 mark IIRC
