Advice on front end, re-map and a few other bits.

Postby Bottled@Source » Mon Feb 04, 2013 1:48 pm

Hello,

I purchased my 2004 Connect in September 2012 in view of never using the back seats in my car so thought I may utilise the space in the back of the van a little better, cant complain, is paying for its self to say the least and was looking to upgrade to a swb transit but after getting my clutch done on Friday Im going to stick with it. But she’s a little worse for ware around the edges.

So far have replaced / purchased

New clutch and slave cylinder fitted for £125! – If you want his number he will have it all done in under 3hrs, w-s-m based.
Alternator loom – still waiting to be fitted, is this an easy job?
Injector seals
New set of wheels as these are a little rotten

I wondered if anyone could help me out on a few bits.

What would be required to change the front end of my 2004 Connect to the 2009 model (bumper / grill / bonnet), and the best place to source parts from? How easy is the job?
Remap or a tuning box? Where to go or what to get?
Can you get lowering springs for the front end? Are they legal being a commercial vehicle?

The Focus AIrfilter box? is this a Mk1 airbox?
De cat? hack the old one off and drill it out or is there some one on here that sells de-cat pipes?
What else is there todo peeps?

Is there any hired help in the south west to help me complete my tasks or help with my mistakes?

Thanking you

Hello there mate. Welcome to the forum.

Alternator loom is an easy one to do. If its the three wire loom you're referring to then its just plugging it in. Although the alternator side is a bit fiddly.

Airbox is a straight swap from a mk1 focus 1.8 or 2.0 petrol. Don't get one from an ST170 as the hole in the bottom is triangular. You want the round hole so you can attach an air feed.

Remap- vantuner (MARTYNX on the forum) is your man for that. Loads of people have had remaps by him and are over the moon with them.

Decat has been covered on the forum. Best bet is to hack out the innards so it still looks like there's a car there ;)

Front end- do you mean the new curvy shape one where the bumper swoops up to the grill or the 2006 shape which hasn't got the square boobs on?

I've just done the airfilter mod, and to be honest, I can't feel an atom of difference! Might even put the original back on for the sake of, er, well, originality!

I noticed a difference as soon as I took the swan neck thing out of the original air box. Revved much more freely. That compared to the air box mod wasn't much of a change but I still felt an improovment.

Thanks for the replies and welcomes guys

I was not aware that there was a front bumper without the square boobs on, I will keep an eye out for one of those on here and on eBay, anywhere else worth looking or any good breakers on here? Is it easy to swap over?

As for the alternator loom, it is the 3 point one and can see where it plugs in, but do you cut the other end off? How does it then fix to where it needs to be?

I will just get on and order a decent Airfilter if there’s no real improvement, does it not suck in that much heat not having a cold feed running from the front? As for the swan neck, removing this from most cars makes a bit of difference, My celica and Ibiza Fr both had them.

Last one - Can you get lowering springs for the front end? Are they legal being a commercial vehicle?

The only difference between those boxes are that two of them have the extra box on the side called a resonator box. It was there to quieten down the induction noise. When I was a member of the FFOC it was a popular mod to remove it and fit a decent filter. It did give quite a nice sound without spending fortunes on an induction kit.

Morning, you say that I only need the bottom half of the airbox? does the top of the connect one fit on top?

Also can you just remove the resonator box? does this plug up with something?

Cheers!

any news on dropping the front?

Yep the top fits the bottom as they are the same size box. The resonator box unclips and pulls out, but it is a tricky barsteward.

As for lowering. The best bloke to speak to is "Valetech" on here, he also runs www.modyourtransit.com/co.uk.

Yes they do, fossil fuels actually. Just crumble in the fuel tank.

Sadly a client brought them up and dumped 5 bags in the office so grabbed one....
