Worn key and no tag number

Postby Appletree » Mon Oct 15, 2018 6:40 am

Hi, Just bought a non running connect with suspected fuel pump failure off a friend to get running and sell on, paid less than scrap value for it so see how we go. It's 03 plate with 60k on it.

The problem I have is when he got it he only had one key which has now worn so much it only works if it goes in the ignition or doors one way.

I spoke to my local ford dealer and they said they can only order blanks keys they don't have any info to order a pre cut key or info as to what the cutting number or transponder number would be.

Find it hard to believe they don't have any info, my 1990 BMW I just took my I.D and log book in to them and they ordered me a new key there and then.

I've got timpsons to make me a copy the best he could but he couldn't see the last number, thought it was a 2 but could have been a 1 either way the key he made doesn't open just locks the doors.

Is there any other way or do I need to start looking at locksets and ecu's?

What would I need to swap? Guess I would need
Door locks, transponder ring, ecu and imobiliser unit.

Any help or advice appreciated.

It'll be an old tibbe key, you can remove the transponder chip from it and transfer that into another key, so just buy a lock set and swap key chips job done.

Or if it was only 1 code you missed then why not get the key done again with 1?

That's the plan I'm going to take the key back to the locksmith to get them to recut the end from a '2' to a '1' hopefully then it will get me a spare key for the doors and I'll know the number to get another one cut.

What's the deal with the chip key, can I reprogram another keys chip and fit it into a new blank if bought a random blue Chip key off eBay to get a spare chip.

I saw a video on YouTube that made it look like you might be able to do it through a scanner like the snap on Solus or similar which a friend has, although the video was on an 05 plate car.

Timsons should be able to clone the key chip in those I think, or if they are the same as the mk6 there's a procedure to program new keys by cycling the ignition 8 times of you search that it might be the same. :D

You need two original keys to do this unfortunately, and you can't use an original and a clone :(
