Exhaust hanging off

Postby SandyHenderson » Sun May 09, 2021 1:22 pm

So I thought I had a worn bearing at the rear left. Looked under (wish I didn't), the exhaust has a hole (I'll maybe try clamp repair it) and the hook from the exhaust isn't connected to the van, it's just hanging. This has got to be the answer to me hearing random noises when below 1500rpm! How would I go about fixing this myself? Maybe buy the same rubber stuff and fit it? No idea  I noticed a bit of my underside is badly corroded too and there's a bit flaking off the frame of the van! Looks like I'll be under there in the summer converting what rust I can and then undersealing it. Not looking under again  the rest of it looks like I can treat it, but damn an actual rusted bit!!

Is the hole in the box or a pipe ?
Why not buy some exhaust putty and cut open an old bean can for now , put putty around hole then put can over it and secure with wire or large jubilee clamps for now till summer

It's in the pipe to the rear of the box. That's a good idea!, I may do this. I'm worried the exhaust is gonna fall off due to rust and where the hole is. I've saw rubber mounts at halfords for cheap. Not sure if this is what I need though. Looks like the old rubber bit is snapped and causing the exhaust with the rod on it to hang. It's hitting off my tow bar frame, hence the reason I thought it was a bearing

Here's the halfords things, anyone used these? https://www.halfords.com/tools/garage-e ... 22518.html

If the metal hanger has snapped off the body, you ideally need a fresh(ish) one and have it welded back on. The extra weight from the system hanging will be detrimental to the rest of it. If I got it wrong, post up a picture pal

Not in Scotland it isn't  our 5 days of summer don't come until August

Kenton, the hangers still on luckily, its just the rubber mount that's came off. I've went out and wrapped some metal wire around the exhaust to hold it onto the body of the van until a new rubber mount comes. As for the hole in my exhaust, it's at the bend on the pipe coming out of the rear of the exhaust... Maybe I'll buy some repair tape for that. I'll really need to get to treating the rear underside. Surprisingly most of my underside is clean with little to no rust, except the rear which has a flaky bit which will need plated. I'll just kurust the rest and underseal in a month's time or so when I get access to a ramp.

Just an update for any future novices...

I bought the new exhaust mount today. Fitting it was a giant PITA! Because you have to attach it onto the exhaust then twist and try squeeze it into the vans body, with gravity forcing the exhaust down, it wasnt easy! I was there for 40 minutes before my mate helped hold the exhaust up as I twist and push. Finally got it on and one half of the mount ripped!!!

Phoned up the place I bought it, explained that for a fiver for a daft bit of rubber that it shouldn't snap so easily, so they're gonna replace it but I need to get it off again and try refit. Am I doing something wrong or is this just an awkward job to do?

It's probably crap quality or badly made. They shouldn't just rip like that. With these rubbers, it should go in at one angle then twist 90° to lock in. You could use a bit of soapy water to ease it. Then reattach the exhaust. :?

It was a euro car parts one  must be my mistake though as I didn't undo the exhaust. Its pretty badly corroded at the bolts and theres a hole there so I tried not to touch that area. I'm gonna bandage the hole as its on the bent part behind the backbox. Theyre gonna replace the part so I'll play dumb and get it and get someone to help next time so I'm not twisting the mount so much. I could have done it in a few minutes if I had someone support the exhaust sooner :D  I'll update here once I tackle this again, need to wait for deliveries!

Fair play mate. Some soapy water when reattaching the exhaust hanger to the rubber once that's in place will help too. Good luck pal, keep at it! 8) :D
