Bulkhead buying tips please

Postby metalworker0 » Thu Jun 23, 2022 5:56 pm

I need a bulkhead for a mk1 van
I'm looking at ebay ..i see them only sometimes as I'm keeping limit of 50 miles on them ; USED and below £100

This is what I've found
1. Mostly or all - there does not appear to be any fitting kits with them (bolts bracketary etc)

2. Some look like they are in two halves upper and lower ..and only one half is for sale

3. Some look like top and bottom are 1 piece

4. Some have a square-ish panel that looks like its missing from the bottom..

what does an original look like?

I've held back and not bought one yet - as too afraid of getting done

So any advice appreciated.

all the best..mark

It's been a while, but I seem to remember a flap on the lower passenger side, to pass an 8ft length of timber through. That may be the missing bit

Fitting is (I think M6) bolts fixing in to rivnuts around the cab frame. If it wasn't fitted with a factory bulkhead, the rivnuts may not be there to fix it to.

There is a compliment of hexagon shaped holes ..just one above the drivers head has a rivnut in place the rest look never used
i do have a rivnut machine and rivnuts (car boot sale find)...not ever used it ..borrowed to someone who said it wasn't working ..maybe its down to me to get it working or they simply didn't understand how to use it .- we shall see.

Thanks Alan for the info

if i was willing to travel a couple of hundred miles either way - 440 total - i could have one of those bulkheads for £20 :D - But its one of those top half jobbies :?

still a bargain if you live in Kent.

so its a waiting game here!

400 miles is a bit of a shlepp on your bike, and it may not fit in the panniers :?

I don't know where you are, but it could be worth asking ME if he can help you out, (depending where in Kent it is) He lives in Kent and travels all over, so he 'may' be able to assist with collection

It's not an advertised service but many of us have done this before, even doing relays :P :D

Now I seem to remember a thread asking about those hexagon shaped holes. If you can get to the back of the holes, you could use an 'inverted' flanged nut (probably M6) to screw into, but may need a drop of Loctite to hold them in place
I still think that rivnuts would be better, and will stay in place :D

Thanks Alan , well that's a shorty one ..i was just saying that if someone lives in kent it's sort of a bargain ..you would have to make the lower half out of plywood or something

i will wait it out , one will come my way one day .

Yeah push bike - funny you should say that

Here's a pic from google earth ..back in September last year

but it's still in use ..i go everywhere on it, now diesels at £1.99.9 /litre

You'll be amazed how quickly you get used to them at 0.00.0 pence per litre
