So, I took off the slave cylinder, and as expected, no sealant or hint of loctite anywhere. Also, the cylinder is a flimsy plastic number, no steel ring at the union. So I'm going to bin that and put on my new one with steel ring and proper sealant.

The clutch action has always been smooth, until the (possible) slave cylinder failure, so I reckon someone replaced the clutch and put in a new slave recently... they just chose an inferior slave cylinder and didn't put any loctite so it failed/let in brake fluid.

But I won't be certain unless I put it all back together and turn it on.

Yes, its lots of work to get to where he is, massive amount of work, hell of a job if you are doing it yourself with no ramp. ..and some clutches wear out in 75,000 miles

just saying .....I wouldn't like to be doing it again ..in perhaps January in a couple of years time

At least try it before spending more money

Can you explain more about what you're suggesting I do? I have checked the seals on the fluid hoses and they're fine. What orange o-ringed end? Do you mean the rusty one with the purple o ring in my pic?
Yes sorry the orange/rusty looking one, just cause there's an O-ring on it doesn't make it right it'll draw air without correct seal...... I know first hand about these seals drawing air on mk7 2.2 fwd clutch pipes , please look again it's not an O-ring it's longer

Yeah I replaced that slave cylinder with new anarobic sealant and it works like a charm. No clutch issues - my hunch was right. New clutch but the previous mechanic's silicone sealant just failed and slave cylinder had a ruptured seal.

Thanks everyone for their help.
