paul2012 - clicking tapping noise from rear brakes

Postby metalworker0 » Sat Jul 03, 2021 12:13 pm

from the trouble shooting section .......i would describe mine as above - clicking tapping noise

could you go into more detail ..perhaps with pictures or illustrations pointing out the parts involved ......does this involve destroying a wheel bearing to get the back plate off ?

4/22/03 Knocking noise from the rear under braking
Knocking noise coming from the rear under braking, the probable cause is a tolerance mismatch between the wheel spindle and the back plate. To rectify this concern, the wheel spindle should be reworked by chamfering the sides.

Thst TSB was issued 18 years ago. I would've though rear spindle, hubs with bearing would have already been replaced.

What year is your Connect :?:
Is it equipped with have rear brake drums or rear disc brakes :?:

If you have rear drums and you haven't looked at them for a while, I expect the biggest problem you will have will be removing the actual drum from the shoes. There will be a lip formed which can stop the removal of the drum. Absolute nighmare mine were.

You need to remove the drums and take a look inside for any broken springs/ retainers etc. These can cause tapping noises, also, if the actual shoe is delaminating. If these rear brakes haven't been looked at for ages, they can become some mess inside, leaking rear cylinders as well.

I had to rebuild mine a few years back, terible mess they were in. I take the drums off once a year now, to grind the lip off that forms on the drum.

Too early to tell, but think this noise was caused by my brake check valve to vacuum supply pipe to air box being NOT CONNECTED!

This is a small diameter rubber pipe, that can found running from the lower air box to a check valve situated at top and middle of bulkhead.

I'm not doing much driving at the moment, will update this post in a few weeks time to confirm this .
