Should coolant be leaking from here?

Postby pierresmith » Wed May 29, 2024 8:39 pm

Hi Gents,

I recently bought a 2012 Connect as a weekend project - non runner suspected crankshaft fail.
In the process of stripping stuff off the engine I removed the drivers side engine mount, and noticed coolant weeping out of one of the bolt holes - see photo.
I'm pretty sure there shouldn't be coolant be coming from here - would it be safe to assume that perhaps someone has over tightened this bolt in the past, and maybe fractured the water pump housing?
The water pump is just to the right of this engine mounting bolt, but I'm pretty sure the bolt shouldn't be in a wet zone.
Let me know what you think guys, appreciate it.
If my suspicions are correct I'm so happy I didn't drain the coolant from the engine before spotting this!
Cheers,
Pete

Your guess is as good as mine

put ptfe tape or lots of thick blue thread locker on the engine mount bolts and hope for the best.

looked at loads of close ups, this is the best i could find..and you still cant see into it

i suppose if you put a bit of wire into it ..you will see how deep it was ..proving it goes into the water jacket

fthe alloy casting on its own,

plus =====if you took the water pump off without fully draining down ..it would enter that bolt hole from the resulting gush as you broke the seal of the water pump

all the best.mark

I had that when I changed the rubber, main timing belt to a chain. Because the timing case is held to the block using the same bolts as the engine mount, when you remove the mount the gasket behind the timing case fails and the coolant will weep from the water jacket around the block and out through the bolt holes. To be honest, it would probably re-seal when you put the mount back on but I took the timing case right off and replaced the case gasket, after applying a bit of RTV to it first. Whoever designed it should be shot!

Ah that makes sense, thanks. So hopefully not fractured metal, just a gasket weep.
Phew!!!
