Ford Tourneo Connect Engine Bay Smoking

Postby Mashking » Mon Dec 09, 2024 10:21 pm

Hi there,

After some advice & assistance, please.

2020 Ford Tourneo Connect – 1.5 Diesel.

I have owned for 12 months, and low mileage 16k. I had some issues with DPF; it was overloaded, and the car went into limp mode – so it went back to the dealership and had a forced regen, it was okay.

Then, 2 months ago, it was acting up again with another exhaust filter overloaded message. I had been driving it on A road at 70mph to clear it.

I had a DPF specialist perform a clean. That cleared it and sorted out the issue. But now I am back to square one again; it is back to showing 'Exhaust filter overloaded, drive to clean' - despite driving at 70mph for over an hour.

The other issue is that every time the vehicle gets to mid-temperature, there is a strong burning smell and white smoke that often bellows out of the engine bay; see the video attached.

I assume it is all related to the DPF in some capacity, whether clogged or not working as expected. Are there any mechanical-minded aficionados who can shed some light on the situation?

Thank you.

Impossible to say about the smoke around engine ..my first thoughts are oil leak from the rocker cover, dripping on to the exhaust.

The DPF problems

i wrote this explanation a while back may as well use it again.
Then you'll gain an understanding .

O-RILEYS Autos - This is the answer everyone gets here : saves us a lot of time ..and puts you quickly in the know.
You either go along with this or you're at the mercy of a garage that will charge you hundreds

Watch O-RILEYS Autos on youtube ..he mainly does DPFs and mainly Transits, there is nothing he cant solve -- he takes you through it step by step ..watch maybe 4 or 5 videos and you'll have the knowledge.

To get to the route of this

You must have plug in diagnostic scanner though ..or you just cant do it ..
They recommend "Forscan" which is free software that you download to a laptop..you buy the interface cable
You must join the forscan forum ..again free, to get the software and more answers.

https://forscan.org/forum/

To give you some knowledge

The mentoring system has two pressure sensors one before the DPF and one after.
The one after will be reading a little greater than atmospheric pressure, when running, the one before will be a bit greater than that one .. when you have a brand new DPF because of a little bit of back pressure from the core.

As the DPF gets full of soot,, the sensor "before" measures a greater pressure.than the one after. the program in the ecu calculates what the difference is between both sides. as a percentage.
The program knows when the difference between one side and the other exceeds certain values ..it then activates the DPF regeneration.
if the difference is beyond when this can happen, it puts up a fault code . it will probably lead to check engine light and limited acceleration.

Failed regeneration's can be caused by vaporiser blockage..too many short trips or a DPF that is totally blocked... the vaporiser is as fuel injector type device that squirts neat diesel into or before the DPF ..it raises the temperature so that soot is burnt off .
There is also a temperature monitor ..so the ecu knows it is regenerating or if this has failed to happen or if its at too higher temperature ..in which case it shuts down the process, to stop it damaging the DPF .. leading to more codes and errors.

As mentioned watch Videos on youtube by "O'Riley's autos" he tells you how to get around all problems with DPFs , shows you cleaning methods and shows you how to interoperate what your scanner is showing ..how to force regeneration ..the pitfalls, the do's and the don'ts .

Diagrams of typical systems will be found with a google search.

Other things that can cause DPF blocking too soon are

Worn out engine that is using oil

Turbo charger that on its way out and leaking oil (caution can lead to diesel runaway)

Fuel injectors that are not performing

Boost pipe leaks - which upsets maf sensor and then it over fuels

Hi, yes, I am familiar with the common DPF problems and have watched O' Rileys Autos videos. That is why I took it to DPF specialist to have it cleaned, but it doesn't seem to have done the job - very concerned with the burning smell and smoke and low mileage - which makes me wonder if DPF is knackered that it is $ to repair.

I should have mentioned that I had full diagnostics OBD done by the dealership and DPF specialist. No error codes or irregularities were reported.

There's nothing further i can add as regards DPF

The smoking -- check for oil leaks

Note.
these oil leaks can come from the engine or systems running off the engine.

Engine

rocker cover gasket
rocker ladder
head gasket
vacuum pump
breather pipes
crankshaft seal

Systems
Booster pipes will get an accumulation of oil in them, that sometimes leaks from the joints and drips. The boost system includes all pipes and intercooler

Power steering fluid leaks ..from the rack, pipes or pump

Could even be a coolant leak dripping on exhaust

Note :
most of the answers above involve you fully participating and checking the above out, by getting your hands dirty and peering into different parts of engine bay from above or underneath. May involve removing parts to see whats going on ..battery , air box and covers...if you don't like that bit of it ..then its a garage ..and your trust in those who run the garage.
