LOSS OF POWER FORD TRANSIT CONNECT 2007 1.8 TDCI 74BHP

Postby AdamD121 » Fri Dec 20, 2024 10:39 pm

Hello All.

I'm after some help please. I have a Transit connect 2007 1.8 TDCI. over the last few weeks the car has developed a fault where it seems it goes into limp mode when the car gets hot. It won't Rev past 1Rpm when it's at its worse and it starts smoking white smoke.

Once the car is cool then it drives normal until it gets Warm and same problem persists.

I've had the EGR blanked and Turbo with manifold changed. Also one of the hose was split this was replaced. however the problem still persists. Anybody else has this issue and how did you overcome. Any help would be great.

You need to read the diagnostics ,.
For that you'll need Forscan which is free software that you download to a laptop..you buy the interface cable.
You must join the Forscan forum ..again free, to get the software and more answers.

https://forscan.org/forum/

I don't know what could cause a problem like this ...the only thing i can think of is the EGR blanking upsetting the pcm

what could be THE BAD NEWS
Certain models had a diesel pump that would fail on these TDCI engines ..the diesel high pressure pump , can fail and spread swarf throughout the system ..this will lead to the injectors failing ..and it needing a complete flush of the fuel system plus new pump...early indications are it going into limp mode.

Checking the fuel filter for bright metal swarf will tell you if that has happened.

I'm not sure of the dates, pump that does this is a Delphi make.

Thank you Mark for getting back to me.
The egr was blanked after a week of the Turbo manifold being replaced as the problem persisted. However after the egr blank still same problem.

It does not throw up no engine lights or anything on the dash.

The problem you mentioned about the diesel pump seems like a big one. If that is the case may just cut losses and get rid.

cutting the fuel filter open is the only way to tell ..well that's cutting without causing more swarf..so no hack saw ..use chisel

my answer is based on previous postings here in this forum ..if you read all the messages about this fuel pump failure problem ..kind of hard to work out the years and the systems they are talking about ..so my answer is a vague pointer .

viewtopic.php?f=54&t=185033&p=1585355&hilit=delphi+fuel+pump+swarf#p1585355

think that's the year made not registered and taxed i think ..may effect 2007 ..

seems - its look for the word delphi written on the pump..if siemens relax

So I've had the van on the computer and the following codes is what have come back please see attached.

I have since had The EGR actuator changed. So I feel confident the EGR side is okay. However the problem still persists. Started off brilliant. Revs good. However after about 40 minutes once engine is warm then it won't Rev past 1.5k

Not checked the fuel filter at the moment.

I'm no guru on this stuff ..i haven't even got a scanner myself ..but have been gaining some knowledge on how it all works ..but im not complete wiz or pretend to be ,.Well i cant really see into you engine or EGR ...has .the actuator been changed without the valve being cleaned ?

errors seem to point to stuck open EGR

which would send the maf into error if not blanked

so that's 3 errors

map sensor would also be off with EGR open - but its blanked ..so maybe expecting to see a reading that isn't coming in

glow plugs maybe one has blown or fuse-able link broken that would not effect above problem

again after EGR blank you need to have it deleted - ignored, programmed / mapped out via someone who knows what they are doing or perhaps you'll never be sure if its all being caused by the blanking.

take the blank back out again and test to see what happens - if returns to normal -- then that;s the problem

people here visit a guy called "vantuiner" to get the EGR mapped out = search threads to contact him

To me this looks like a failing alternator or a power control module issue. I'm leaning on a system wide electronics issue, given your list of fault codes and described symptoms.
Typically when voltages drop or they're unstable, it can mess with alot of sensor data. A loss of power in this situation would not be unheard off.
This happening when the engine is warm is also not unheard of, to me.
I had a case once that had a similar issue, though not temperature related. Symptoms were similar. Fixed it with a new alternator.

Also, is the EGR only physically blanked off, or is it also deactivated by reprogramming?
Physically blanked off should not cause issues like this, but it might be throwing other things off, which can make diagnostics run in circles. I would eliminate this variable.

Diagnostics:

I would start by looking at how the grounding wire is connected to the frame. Those can often be corroded. Then check the battery terminals. Then the main positive leads.

Then I would ivestigate voltage data. FORSCAN can draw a graph from live data. See if there's spikes or drops in it. Start viewing the data from when the engine is cold, all the way to when it's warm when the fault is happening. Compare.
You should do this for both; the alternator and the PCM. You can view live data from both at the same time.

I would also get the battery tested. Quick and easy and should only cost a few coins.
