Battery dieing and engine cut out

Postby loot » Sat Jan 11, 2025 11:13 am

Hi guys tc 2015

Not mine, neighbour, went out on Monday it will have been cold but probably about zero degrees.

Started up I think all ok.
Drove for a bit then the power steering went heavy and then battery warning on the dash then the engine cut.

He bought a new battery and fitted that, it was all good for most of the day then the same thing happened.

I towed it home on Friday, there were battery lights but turn the key and they dimmed.

So I thought pas is electric which explains why that went dead with the loss of power, the lad charged it up over night and in the morning it started up ok and is running at 13.8v

So the question is. What can the problem be?

I do notice the key feels a little bit loose as in the switch notches seem a little less notchy so I wonder could the ignition switch be on its way ? The other thought was the alternator brushes or internals or the free wheel pulley on it if it has a clutch type might be stiff? Stuff to look at really but I thought I'd any of you lads are familiar with this problem it would save me a headache..

Cheers guys :P

I've done a quick search

Cheers Mark, it's just a one way friction wheel I think it allows the belt and crank power to dampen and not damage the alternator when you speed up or slow down and helps fuel economy and wear.

You want to check the crank pulley as well this seems to be a failure item on all transits ..you never know it may be about to fall off

other than that, a Parasitic drain on the battery may also have to be checked out .

I would replace that ignition switch before you look any further, then I would check the alternator output, both unloaded, and then with as many electrics turned on as you can, whilst fast idling the engine

I've advised those, the load has checked the cookware with a meter as much as he can,he's told his brother to stay local. It's a neighbour and they didn't offer any money so I'm happy to advise them but I got my things to do. :P

Currently the wife has gifted me a hacking cough, dizziness and poor temp control. Currently dithering
