Ford transit connect 1.8tdci 2011 stating issues

Postby Carlos1105 » Sun Jan 12, 2025 6:24 pm

Good evening
I have a Ford transit connect 1.8 tdci unfortunately the wet belt snapped the week before Christmas.
Engine has been totally rebuilt new pistons new valves new bearings.
Since we fitted the engine we are struggling to start it all fuel system has been bled, had the injector bench tested and have now bought four new injectors new fuel pressure switch in the spider.
The van cranks for a short while then will suddenly build up enough diesel to start for about six seconds getting a small amount of diesel knock then just cuts out and takes a while to start again won’t rev and won’t stay running I have a video with it plugged into the diagnostic machine showing it trying to start the figures when starting but I don’t understand the figures on the fuel pressure rail. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I’ll work out how to post up a video
Cheers Carl

According to a search ive just done here on the connect forum --- Fuel pressure should be greater than 1050 Bar (15228 PSI) - after 5 seconds of engine cranking.

according to knobby guru here , 300 bar to start ..but that is mk6 / 7 sorry just relying on info here ..which may be sometimes incorrect

so ..i assume forscan measures this with a pressure sensor that is on the fuel rail ..and may state it in all sorts of scales of measurement ,..i don't know as i don't have forscan .. megapascal, psi , kg/cm2, Bar.

not sure ---new injectors mean the code on each has to be typed into forscan .....and it has to do learns with another program on forscan

there is a lot of other things that may effect starting: crank sensor , cam sensor ... even the ignition switch

BTW ..one member here never got it to start after rebuild, because he had just randomly put the valve shims back in the wrong places... when ever valve work is done, the shimming measurement (valve clearance) and replacement process must take place!

Thanks for getting back to me. Everything was numbered before it went all back into the cylinder head so I’m assuming it all in the right place. It does start after eventual cranking but only runs for about 6 to 10 seconds with a bit of a diesel knock but then cuts out. Yes injectors have been coded. I’ve got a video of me trying to start it and then a short run why it’s connected to a diagnostic with all the fuel pressures but I can’t seem to upload it. I think I’ve got about 11,000 psi when it’s running.

Sorry did not make it Chrystal clear ..if valves are replaced or ground in ..then the valve clearance must be measured and shims swapped out if incorrect. too small a clearance will lead to valves staying open slightly ..and not enough compression to start.

a compression test will find out if low compression is your starting problem.
