MK1 Connect. Injector Leak and LOTS of smoke.

Postby 247Dealing » Fri Jan 17, 2025 10:03 pm

Hi all. I am working through an issue on my MK1 Transit Connect. It is a 2009 1.8 TDCi.

First issue started when injector 1 started leaking and van was chugging and eventually a ton of smoke burst out the exhaust and van stalled. Stripped injector roadside, cleaned it up and just managed to get home.

New copper seal fitted and new stretch bolt. Now engine is ticking over quite sweet, even better than before. No codes at all like when it happened. But now it's kicking out a lot of smoke still. I do admit the injector seems to be leaking from the injector pipe so I will look into that further.

I was wondering if a secondary problem occurred and I thought to check turbo pipes. The smoke is bellowing from the turbo and out of the air filter box. I removed the pipe from the turbo and it has quite a build up of thick black oil.

I am going to redo all the injector seals and see if that clears up the smoke issue. And also fix the small leak from the pipe.

Do any of you think it could be the turbo or could just a relatively small injector leak cause SO much smoke?

Happy to fit a new turbo but not a 2 minute job so would like some opinions please.

Thank you!

Caution - well you know what happens when the turbo seals fail and leak oil .....you get a full revs, diesel engine runaway. that you can only stop if you stall it in gear ...and if it does this for more than a few seconds ......a destroyed engine will result ...the engine runs on its own engine oil as fuel, not the diesel, sort of like perpetual motion that your unable to stop!

search youtube using words "diesel run away".

sometimes it is a bit oily down there, as the breather empties its vapours into the pipe above it.

all the best..mark

Thanks Mark. At the start if fixing the injector leaks, it did run on for a few seconds. Now it starts on the button and stops right away.

I am forscanning it later as I realise I needed to code one of the injectors as its a replacement.

Thanks, Mark.

well you should get your mind and body prepared for such an eventuality.

don't practice it ...but have on your mind the emergency procedure .

Ignition off - foot on brakes hard, dip clutch, select high gear ....let clutch out . stall.
