2013 FTC stalling, rough surging idle, no codes... Help pls

My van is a 2013 Ford Transit Connect XLT (4 Cylinders N 2.0L MFI DOHC 121 CID)

The problem started with the engine occasionally stalling when coming to a stop, then putting it in neutral the van would restart like normal. over the past few months it has progressed to a very rough idle with rpms jumping around, stalling at idle, and stalling nearly everytime the van stops. Van still starts fine but stalls out shortly after.

I have forscan, there are no engine codes.

First thing I replaced based on research and advice from a mechanic friend was the throttle body. The problem persisted.

I did a smoke test blowing smoke into the air intake hose to try to check for vaccum leaks, couldn't find any.

In the past year I've also replaced:
alternator
spark plugs
valve cover gasket
Air filters


Does anyone have any suggestions on what could go wrong that would cause the van to stall like this but wouldn't throw any engine codes?

i know nothing about this engine

can only make suggestions

look up re-setting throttle position sensor// there will be a routine like dabbing the throttle three times with the ignition on etc...well that's probably not it .....but that's how it was done on my last car a rover.

other things to look at ...now im not in familiar territory ..but there are switches on the clutch pedal that activate cruise control and are related to upping RPM for other things like hill start assist, and etc ...and these can come loose brake off or become faulty.

throttle bodies have a stepper motor on the side of them .....very common to have plastic gears, that are glued onto motor shafts, the new throttle body, if a used one , could have the same fault, that would be slipping gear on the shaft or sheared teeth on the gears.

evaporative emission control fault .. electric valves and pipes leading to the fuel tank.

coil overs playing up

other than getting it plugged into forscan.

when in forscan -- you'll be observing the fuel trims and oxygen sensor readings in real time on graphs, This requires knowledge on what the graphs should be doing if running perfectly.

Sounds like an intermittent fuel feed issue.
Or water in the fuel.
..or a grounding issue.
Hell, it could even be a crank position sensor.

Since there are no fault codes, something is not tripping off any sensor. Which to me suggest an issue with fuel delivery, be it pressure, flow or quality.
It would not be a crazy concept if yours took some water into the tank through some way.
A loss in fuel pressure is likely to throw up a fault, but flow maybe not.
If it's an issue with flow, then the filter might be at fault.

This is a problem that I would recommend a skilled and reputable mechanic for.
Personally, I would start by looking at live data from injectors, fuel line pressure (pre and post, if available), position sensors, voltages, etc.
I would pay attention to discrepancies between injector data, drops or inconsistent data from other sensors.

I have a 2013 Ford Transit connect with 2.0l duratech engine.

This problem has progressively gotten worse over time, starting with it occasionally dying at stop lights to now it dies immediately when out in gear. It has a rough idle that will repetitively surge rpms. When I shift it into gear the engine will die immediately. The dash lights stay on, I don't lose computer power, just the engine stops. Putting it in neutral it starts right back up.

I have forscan and scanned for codes, nothing.

Here is what I've done to troubleshoot/other repairs the van has had so far:
New pcv valve and hose
Cleaned intake manifold
Cleaned MAF and MAP sensors with MAF sensor cleaner.
New throttle body
New fuel injectors
Smoke test for vaccum leaks, none found
New spark plugs, and new valve cover gasket since there was oil in the spark plugs.
I unplugged the EGR as I saw someone recommended in a thread here to see if that was the problem, van ran and died the same, but I have not pulled the EGR to look at it at all.

Van also has new alternator and new battery

Anyone have any other ideas of things I can check myself before I have to give up and take it to a mechanic?

i'm sorry, 99 percent of transit problems in these forums are diesel related, or of older petrol engines, so we only have that knowledge base.

Where as the focus, etc ..well with them, its more common to have this engine ..along with the problems that go with it. which you will find plenty of answers in the focus forums ...good luck
