Timing belt tensioner

Postby xillent » Sun Apr 13, 2025 7:53 pm

I tried to add a wee video but computer says no to mp4 files. I was just wondering how much movement there should be in the timing belt tensioner when engine is revved?

what engine, you don't say ...

if 1.8 /.once tension is set with the internal cam, and .once centre bolt is tightened there should be no movement in it .

Sorry, it's the 1.5.

I'll have a look at the YouTube idea but I'm challenged in that area. :)

I think they are all the same, various ways of setting the tension ..recent fords- past 30 years, have a cam and set tension with a spring, you twist the pulley against the spring and line it up with a set mark or hole, ..then tighten centre bolt , once centre bolt tightened they don't move,, the tension is then set. very important to get this right!

The aux belt tensioners do move though..its the spring that tensions them ..no lock bolt on them ,

Here you can see a full 1.5 cambelt install ...you can see it springing before he tightens the bolt that locks it up

if its the 16 valve one then it will be different !!!

from 39 mins or there about --

I think your locking centre bolt has possibly come loose . or you are seeing a worn out bearing.

so you'll have to go through all the steps in the video if bolt is loose

if so its a wonder the belt has not come off and wrecked the engine

if the wheel wobbles ...and does not move in the plane of the tension ,.,,,,,the bearings buggered. . new tension wheel required .

i cant even see the timing belt in your video never mind the tensioner

think you are at cross purposes here ..are you talking about movement of the whole engine ..if so yes the engine is supposed to move that much, its on rubber mounts.

Thanks, maybe it's not the tensioner I'm looking at. the timing belt was recently changed at around 98000

That video was great. Maybe it's the tensioner for the crank pulley I'm looking at?

It's Auxiliary belt tensioner, doing what its supposed to do ... and nothing to do with the timing belt. the timing belt tensioner is behind a cover

As belts wear they get stretched ..and stretching does not happen evenly ..so you are seeing the results of this plus inertia acting on the pulley as engine speeds up and slows down.
That does not say the belt is in good condition or bad condition ..that i cant see.

The aux tensioner is the silver looking thing here- pic below ..at 2 o'clock in relation the the bottom pulley.

Thanks Mark, as always. Really appreciated on here btw.

I think your bio says Prestatyn. We were supposed to walk there on Offas Dyke last year. I'd have looked you up and bought you a pint. Unfortunatley my wife took ill at Langollen (i think) so we had to cut short. Will do it eventually.

Just ask anything ..will do my best to help.

not as familiar with the 1.5 though ...but i'm learning.

i remember back in the 80's, met a guy in a pub in Tintern abbey area who was walking the Offa's dyke, we were on a motorcycling holiday ..camping . me on a a Kawasaki Z650SR, friend on a BMW R65LS

6 days later later, we walked into out local pub on a Saturday afternoon in Prestatyn ...and guess who was there. he must have walked 30 miles a day - Good going - impressive, we thought.

Walking 30 a day is very impressive. I could maybe do it for one day but that'd be it.
