Is this burning oil?

Postby Pinkeric » Tue Jun 10, 2025 9:16 pm

2013 Ford transit connect 1.8 TDCi manual.

It’s doing this pretty consistently after 5 minutes of driving, and will stop when left to idle. Doesn’t do it on startup. As far as I can tell I’m not losing any oil or coolant, I’ve put about 2500 miles on it and not noticed any drops. Driving fine, pulls, turbo kicks in about 2000 rpm, no noises or misfires I don’t think. I’ve changed 3 injectors, got another to do. The bores were pretty rusty but cleaned out. I’ve run a bottle of turbo cleaner through it. Changed the fuel filter. The EGR is blanked. I can’t see any bubbles in the coolant when revving, no milkshake in the oil. I know it needs a new clutch so really trying not to spend tons on labour before that, but don’t want to book that in till this is sorted.

I think the turbo was changed before I got it, could this be something to do with that being fitted wrong? I know I’ve got some air leaks in the engine somewhere, could this be something to do with fuel mixture?

Any suggestions for diagnostics i can do to narrow it down welcome.

Title says : is it burning oil

Then you say you're not loosing any oil of coolant

You also say not noticed any drops - is that drops in level ???

So what do you really mean by loosing .or drops?

Is loosing as in getting lost into the cooling system and drops are drips ?
................................................................................................................

How much is it going down on the dipstick ..how much oil are you adding per 1000 miles... that's what we need to know... that, if excessive would be the indicator of oil burning .

and just noticed the video link after i had answered ...looks like blue smoke in one or two secs of video .....yes that is an indicator of oil burning.

which could be caused by the turbo or breather system ..if not the rings of valve seals

unless it was a trick of the light in the video ..i dont know

Well, either, but I meant no drop in oil level. I can’t remember exactly where it was on the dipstick when I got it but I’ve been checking regularly recently and no change, halfway on the dipstick.

just had a look at your other video again

needs others to look at it

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/b49ff67vrYI

could this be Egr cooler leaking coolant?

if so, that is the problem.

dab leak and on tongue and sweet taste is indicator of antifreeze ..also the exhaust will smell sweet.

bypass egr cooler pipes to test it

each pipe should be joined together, instead of on the cooler to test this

I stopped that leak around the EGR gasket with a new proper blanking plate, turns out it had a piece of tin that didn’t cover the whole pipe. I will try joining the EGR coolant pipes together though, thanks for the suggestion.

i originally dismissed the bubbles as just a bad gasket and condensate, because it was winter.
but after seeing combination of that and the smoke and in summer ..its now different .

I don’t think that did it, disconnected the coolant pipes and joined them together, drove it for 5 minutes and back came the plume. I’m in denial about my head/gasket, but can’t really think of anything else, unless it is boost leaks messing with the mixture. I’ll get it smoke tested to see if I can get at the leaks. Still confused by the apparent lack of coolant and oil consumption, but I have been avoiding driving it.

You have to now buy a pile of equipment to test it

Coolant system pressure tester.
Compression tester
and looky here - they are back after a few months absence and cheaper
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/305981927021?

and if you are really into it ..an expensive boroscope

Can you smell antifreeze at the exhaust

The only hard bit about this headgasket is all the gubbins is hard to get at ..because its placement close to the firewall at the back of the head - expect broken studs...least you get to clear out all that gunge from the intake runners, caused by the egr

Noting you are at 12 years ! THESE Engines - from 2007 ..October i think ..onwards, they were fitted with wet belts instead of a timing chain under the lower cover ....if you have to do such a things as strip the head off .....it will be easy the change the wetbelt whilst you are there ..they recon ten years or under 80,000 is safe, (ish) any more, then you are on borrowed time .
