2010 to 2012 Engine Swap

Postby RedRiver » Wed Aug 20, 2025 11:58 pm

I have a 2012 TC XLT 2.0L with 290k miles and low compression on cylinder #2. Common issue with these trucks. I now have a 2010 TC XL with a 2.0L reman engine and transmission with about 80k miles on it. I plan on installing the motor/trans from the 2010 into the 2012. I will leave the ECM on the 2010 engine when it is swapped. Will the 2010 ECM need to be reprogrammed to recognize the modules in the 2012? Will the 2010 ECM recognize the 2012 key in ignition when starting? What other problems might I run into after the swap? I plan on doing this once the weather cools down some here in central Texas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated so I don’t have any surprises that I can’t rectify.

Very unlikely you are going to get a replay on this .. as the members here are are mainly owners of diesel versions ... and even the amount of members here doing swaps like this is low for diesels ... so slim chance of a reply ..... ive just searched for transit connect USA forums .. and very little happening in them as regards posts or topics on any subject .

so I'll say you are on your own, finding out what happens, when you do it .

The things you want to look out for:
Are there different sensors for this and that, that have to be swapped over
Are things like the throttle body the same.
Everything that looks to be different will have to be swapped over to ensure it fires up without problems.
For instance injectors may be a different kind and incompatible with the ecu running them, Not sure with gasoline .. but on a diesel the injectors must be coded to the ECU (pcm)

and 2010 and 2012 are transitional period from euro 4 to 5 .. so may have gizmos on one but not the other
all the best.mark

Thanks for your reply. The 2010-2012 versions are pretty much similar. I see a lot of consistency between the two with a few differences. I guess that I will see how things drop in and connect up. My main concern will be the ECU and if it will recognize the other modules as normal vs foreign and will need programming. Time will tell so I will update this thread as I progress. Thanks again.
