2019 Steering assist malfunction u3000 96c8

Postby Luminiss » Thu Sep 11, 2025 9:43 am

Hi all, first time poster so hello

I have recently bought a none runner 2019 1.5 that had done the 7mm chain and belt, replaced the cams water pump belt ect and all running well.

Since getting it running ive got a steering assist malfunction on the dash and no power steering, I have no idea on the history of the van I bought it from a 3rd party garage that had been working on it, had been sat for months so I never got a chance to talk to the seller about any other issues other than the obvious engine issues

The code im coming up with and googling is pointing me towards the steering motor
I have got live data on my topdon and it shows the steering angle sensor is reading -45000 dgrs to the left and when moving the wheel it doesnt change
I've got 14v power at the plug to the motor so I know the main fuse is ok also on a brand new battery.
What else can I be checking for, could it be the steering sensor or the motor on the rack itself?

Any help appreciated

fault is connected to with series of sensors or wiring

so check all wiring to sensors associated with the steering.

Minus 45 usually that is code, means that unit is at fault, degrees meaning it is probably steering angle sensor, contained with in the steering wheel--- wiring to it rather than the sensor itself .

Most likely cause is the "clock spring" - this is a coiled up ribbon cable within the steering wheel under the air bag, its function is to allow the steering wheel to turn whilst still electrically connected to everything on the steering wheel .. horn,. steering angle sensor and any buttons that control other functions, this coiling and uncoiling causes stress on the wires within the ribbon and they eventually break.

This does not mean to go out and buy the clock spring ... there are ways and means of testing this.

That's just one sensor explained .. there are many more .. but that's the one to check first.

Maybe forscan will give you more info.

Forscan
if you have forscan you would have more info than just fault codes.

as regards reading codes

NOTE: you can use forscan to get correct fault codes with proper DETAILED explanation of them - a generic fault code reader may be somewhat misleading, or doesn't work (or we on the forum are unfamiliar with it)_you can see a lot more with forscan. like live running data etc of all systems, everything .. ABS signals, EGR open percentages, pressures, temperatures , graphs

"Forscan" is FREE software that you download to a laptop..you buy the interface cable -- this is just the cable, you need a laptop)
You can join the forscan forum ..again free, to get the software and more answers.
