Its exactly as you say, an idler

Have a look to see if its the newer modified goldy/silver metal one or the black plastic one, easy way to see if its been changed :D

If left, im sure it will seize eventually

Real easy :D

Take the splash shield off, 15mm spanner to loosen the tensioner and whip the belt off, if its the black plastic idler, flick the cap off and undo the torx50 bolt, fit the new one on (the cap wont fit back on) and put the belt back on, simple as that

might check mine 2moro as well to see if its plastic one too.

Sounds stupid, but has it got plenty of PAS fluid in it :?:

Like sparky says, poss PAS pump/alt problem, get a long screwdriver/bar and see if by putting the screwdriver on places and listening you can pinpoint the noisey area better

I wouldnt say anything is common apart from the idler pulley, but if you have changed it then it aint that, the only other thing is the PAS pump goes noisey but usually if its got a leak from somewhere and looses it fluid
