TDDI, removing lower crankcase

Postby Wobby » Sun Jan 25, 2009 4:17 pm

I have a transit connect with a TDDI engine (53 plate).

I am trying to remove the lower crankcase with the block and gearbox still mounted in the van, seems its could be fixed from inside the bellhousing and may need the gearbox off?

Can anyone confirm this is the case?

hi
you cant remove bottom half of crankcase im afraid crank rear oil seal is fastened to both upper and lower halves of block, so its either engine or gearbox out, why do you need to do this ? if its to replace bearings forget it ,crank will be as worn as bearings !
it was like that before i touched it !!

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

Its a long running saga, i have another thread running if you have time for a look :)

Have now located my problem, the small ends have worn/ damaged creating what sounds like a top end rattle. Also down on compression because of it. Can physically rotate piston and its sitting slightly lower than No2  . Hoping this is whats lost the compression rather than bore damage. Checking bore dimensins with micrometers once pistons are out.

Probably looking to get a replacement van while this work is carried out. Almost glad the engine is coming out, much better to work on. Never agreed with the removing big ends with the engine in, so much harder to do and easier to make mistakes.
