Possible leak from gearbox :/

Postby shaiboyuk » Mon Aug 13, 2012 2:47 pm

Hi all,

Was checking my Connect over today, and noticed that the n/s inner cv joint, going into gearbox is leaking, it has a split in the gator, but what's coming out of the gator don't look like grease but oil :/ is it possible to have a leak from the gearbox, into the gator then out this split?? Is there a seal at the cv joint into the gearbox that could be replaced to fix it?

Thanks
Cheers

When my gaiter split it did look rather thin the stuff that came out. Got a new inner and outer set fitted and they had different grease in each from what I could see. I'd just replace the gaiter and see how it goes.

Thanks mate,

I've replaced many cv gators in my time and never seen grease this thin. Also it smells like gearbox oil :/ I've had a look in a Haynes manual and there is a seal at gearbox where the driveshaft enters, and "seems" to be replaceable, but how easy it is, I dunno :/ I just find it strange if it is gearbox oil for it to leak through the gator and not round where the driveshaft is entering :/

Thanks
Cheers

Yea there will be seals that are replaceable and it is unusual for the oil to come through the gaiter. It seems you've figured the issue out yourself though so good luck with the repairs :)

anyone help with what oil to get? I know its 75W90 but went into halfords today, and had 5-6 different types of 75w90 and the staff in there didn't have a clue :/ Went to Ford and they want silly money for it :o

Halfords list of 75w90 gear oil here:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... pp%7C%7C20

any would any of them be ok as a topup just now, until i get a chance to strip it down and fix leak.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply BLUECONNECTION, Will have a look on ebay :)

Anyone know how much I'll need for a full gearbox fill? Some dealers says 3litres others are saying 2 litres and the Haynes manual says 1.9 litres :/

i think mine took something stupid like 2.1l but that was with the gearbox drained off the van for over a week, you best getting 3l just in case you spill some or yours takes more, its cheaper than a new gearbox
