battery light

hi i have a 2003 transit connect tdi the problem is the battery light has been on for the last 3 years i have been driving round with my battery light on, it happend with my old van as well. the battery charges, fan belt not loose etc i have had two or three so called mechanics look at it & nobody seems to know just what it is, it doesnt affect the van in anyway just does my head in lol
