Connect power ratings

I know this is a daft question, but bear in mind Im an old duffer still getting used to "electronics" in vehicles.
If all the transit connects are 1.8ltr how is the different power outputs achieved ? is it solely down to the engine management ? if so could I get a 75 and change it to 110 electronicaly ? in my day you'd drop in a BFO engine !!!
