8x4 sheets in LWB? help!

Postby Benbristol » Mon Oct 29, 2012 3:08 pm

Hi all,

Looking at buying a LWB in order that i can get, on the rare times I need to, 8x4 sheets in.

Thing is, the description for getting these in is 'diagonally'. Ideally, I want to rack out the back so I'll have quite wide shelving all along the driver's side for all my tools and consumables. Will the boards still fit in?

If anyone can help or, and I'm pushing it here, post a picture of 8x4 sheets in the back of a Connect that would be great.

Many thanks.

If you shelve up to the rear doors, they wont go in, its a tight fit , but if you make your shelf with an angle at the door end , you could get away with it.

Thank you Dagenham Dustin.

Looks like I'm back to the drawing board. I had decided on a Connect LWB as the folding down passenger seat is such a clever idea and I'm surprised no other manufacturer has done it. I have to rack out a large area of the van I buy as i've got a lot of tools and consumables but not enough that it justifies a full size transit. The Connect seemed like the only choice but if I can't get 8x4 sheets in without sacrificing a significant part of the loading area I'm going to have to start thinking from scratch!

a SWB full size transit isn`t that much bigger than a LWB connect, imo

...Just to complicate it I often park in multistory carparks so need to keep the height down. Im an domestic electician who doesn't need a huge load area but does the odd building job so need to carry sheets. I don't think anyone makes a van for me !

what about if you start your racking so far off the floor and suspend it from the sides so you could slide sheets inside flat on the floor? i have a feeling when i plyed my floor an 8x4 sheet slid exactly between the wheel arches on my SWB, this is what im going to go for on my next van, fed up of having to roof rack it every time i need a sheet!

Westers -

Yeah, it's fit width but not nearly on the length. That's why I was going for the Connect with the sit flat passenger seat that extends the length so the sheet would fit in (or a triple ladder). I don't want a roof rack as the van wouldn't then fit in a multi storey

Just something to think about, with an 8X4 sheet you will probably be blocking your near side view, something the boys in blue would just love to have a little chat about with you.

YOU CAN DO THIS, AS I'VE DONE IT WITH 3 SHEETS OF THIN MDF. 8'X4' (NOMINAL) SHEETS ARE ACTUALLY A BIT SMALLER AT 2.4M X 1.2M.

IN THE LWB THERE'S A 1.5M X 2M FLOOR SECTION EXTENDABLE BY THE LHS FOLDING SEAT, WHICH FOLDS FLUSH TO THE FLOOR

ONLY POSSIBLE WITH THE FOLDING MESH BULKHEAD. FITTED DIAGONALLY, THEY END UP PRESSED UP AGAINST THE 'B' PILLAR, AND CAN BE RETAINED BY THE SIDE SECTION OF THE ADJOINING OVERHEAD RAFTER.

SIDE VISION ISN'T OBSCURED. NO OTHER 'COMPACT' VAN HAS THE HEIGHT & FLOOR SPACE TO DO THIS.

HOPE THIS HELPS.

PS.
YOU'LL NEED TO SET UP YOUR DRIVER SIDE RACKING TO END AT THE REAR END OF THE WHEELARCH, SO CHECK THIS OUT BEFORE YOU FIT IT.

Vans are designed for people with imagination. Cars are so limiting ... what can you do with them?

I may be wrong but I am sure a LWB high top connect is taller than a small transit. Put a roof rack on the connect and you wont get into many carparks ( ive tried).

a lot roof transit will fit into most multi story car parks no problem... and an 8x4 sheet fits easy in the back...

even easier if you keep your shelves off the ground a bit - then you can put the sheets flat on the floor ;)
