Just one more noise...

Postby myweevan » Thu Oct 25, 2012 9:24 pm

Put van through MOT, and got rid of suspension knocks etc before hand. also changed alternator belt to get rid of the squeeling, now i am left with an annoying knock/ticking noise from something that said belt is operating (i took the belt of and the noise stopped), changed idler pulley and tensioner pulley as there was slight play, but its still there, the alternator is tight so doubt its it.
Whats the pulley above the crank pulley? theres slight play in it?

Anything else i havnt thought of?

Thanks in advance.

I have a similar problem - intermittent clattering noise from rhs of the engine. Stops when I take the aux belt off. Play in tensioner pulley and idler pulley, so changed those but noise still present. Van currently in the garage for other things and I got them to look at the noise (or rather listen to it...) and they reckon it's the alternator pulley shot. Apparently the alt pulley is like a bicycle hub - belt pulls it one way on a clutch but if you turn it the other way it should free-wheel. This eliminates any looseness in the belt during operation (despite tensioner keeping things in check). Hence if bearings in alt pulley are failing then it will snatch belt and cause tensioner to bounce about - and hence the clattering noise. So maybe check alt pulley for any lumpiness - not easy to detect when turning by hand as obviously the problem occurs at much faster speeds than can be turned by hand. Also check all other pulleys.

Aha - just learned there are three types of alternator pulleys - solid, clutched and overrun.

Interesting video on this page:
