refused MOT test, how bad? URGENT!

Postby inzor » Fri Oct 12, 2012 10:04 pm

had the van in for an MOT today. according to my brother they have refused to test it as the exhaust is blowing, lights are out and the sills need replaced.

anyone know how much it would cost to put these right? its the sills im worried about.

cheers

Sills gone on a Transit Connect? Has it been washed with sea water every week?

How long is a piece of string....depends how much welding is needed! Did you not check the lights before you took it in?

there is a little rust on jacking points but nowere else.
lights have new bulbs, all working fine. must need them aligned.
i knew there was a hole in the flexy pipe on the exhuast after the downpipe but didnt have time to fix it.

refused as the work couldnt be done within the free re-test time or something?

all this is from a text from my brother, who works there, he cant remember what other fualts there might be.

i honestly expected to only fail on the blowing downpipe flexy, it drives perfectly, lights give plenty of...light, good on fuel, no loss in power, litrally everything works. and it doesnt pull to the side under braking or anything, also handles well and no knocking anywere.

spoze i could youtube how to adjust the lights, get it up on a ramp and see what my uncle thinks when he's back on shore. hes a welder/blacksmith.

An MOT refusal mean it's been through a MOT test but has failed !

VOSA'S Rules reguarding MOT retests

If the vehicle is left at the testing station for repair and is retested before the end of 10
working days following the day of the initial failure, then only a partial retest is needed
for which no fee may be charged.

If the vehicle is removed from the testing station for repair and returned for retest within
10 working days following the day of the initial failure, then only a partial retest is
needed and a partial retest fee may be charged
.

Basically, the garage have 10 days in which do the work & retest it for fee.

If you take the van away from the garage, you have up to 10 days in which to re-submit for MOT retest & they should only charge you a partial MOT test Fee !

If they didn't charge you it sounds as though they've done you a favour by making you aware that it needs some bits n bobs doing first....

Oh right, just alignment! When you said "lights are out" thought you meant out as in not lit up!

Jacking points corroded well I guess the van could be ten years old now, so it's possible. Take it somewhere else for a second opinion would be my advice.

thats not the way l read it, l get the idea the van wasn't tested at all. Maybe l got the wrong end of the stick? A refusal of an MOT certificate is a fail.

but which is it in this case? Accormding to the thread title the test itself was refused. I would think that would mean it wasn't even entered on the system, though could be wrong. Maybe the OP can clarify?

Right as a tester myself, you can refuse to test a vehicle,if the vehicle is not fit to be driven, levels low, excess smoke, doors bonnet ect won't open,if whilst conducting the test you find an item which falls into a category of dangerous you can abort the test or abandaon, but you will be issued with a v30 listing the reason why,a blowing exhaust is not a refusal, you cannot refuse to carry out an emissions test if all pre checks are satisfactory. All pre checks should be undertaken before logging the test onto the vosa linked pc
