Newbie with a daft question....

Postby caddyboy » Tue Feb 05, 2013 11:51 pm

Been offered a 55 plate Connect L220D with 31000 miles on the clock for £3000.

Can anyone tell me if its a LWB or SWB, I do know its got a hi-top, not seen it yet though. I've done a bit search around and can't telll from the pics I've seen. I done a "go compare" quote with the reg and it came up as a swb but all the ones i see for sale on fleabay are lwb. I'm a bit confused (doesnt take much!)

Also what bhp is it likely to be??

Any help greatly appreciated, it's just for a little work van so doesnt have to be fast or owt, just reliable.

HI welcome to the forum

The Connect L220 D is the LWB Hi-Top with the 75ps TDCI engine

Athought I would cautious reguarding the mileage as 31,000 - which is extremely low for the year. Check all paperworks listed below

MOT certificate (All MOT certificates issued from november 2012 now show the current mileage & the recorded mileage for the previous 3 years !)
You can also do a MOT history check free here at  http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/internet/j ... equest.jsp
Service history if available
& lastly do a Hpi check - https://www.mycarcheck.com/

You can get the vehicles details reguarding engine, body, colour etc here  http://www.etis.ford.com/vehicleRegSelector.do (Ford Etis)
Enter the vehicles reg number, & on the right hand side of screen it will list the vehicles details including vin number.
under "cab Style" it should say Extended van, this means LWB.

Thats great!

I do know a bit about the van, it belonged to a friends elderly father who died last Summer, he was a semi retired plumber and used to do the odd job but it was his main transport.

I will check all the usual stuff anyway, although it was mot'd and taxed just last week, it's been sat for a few months while the old guys estate has been getting sorted out. I'm kinda hoping he's had it since new. It seems like a bargain though.

Thanks again for the help, no doubt I'll be back on here again, soon!

What can be done to it to make it a bit quicker?

Sorry in advance for all the questions but most of the vans I've owned have been T4's and Caddy's so Fords are new to me!

And another daft question, should the van come with a central locking fob? Since my mate has had to clear out all his Dad's stuff all he has found is a key (so far). Can I buy one if needs be?

Excellent, cheers for that. took the van for a test drive last night, it was like driving a new van after my 105k mile old Inca. (which incidentally i've had for about 7 years and has been great). Pick up the new one on Saturday, then all the other questions will follow...;-)

There has to be a mistake here . There's no model L220D model but there is a T220 L. It's definitely a SWB so has a low roof. The SWB models are T200 and T220 in different trim levels - 'base', 'L', 'LX', or Hallmark (2005 year). The difference between the T200 and T220 models is the 200Kg extra payload on the T220 (825Kg rather than 625Kg).

I can't believe anyone can confuse these with the LWB High Roof. You should have gone to Specsavers :D
The model numbers on these are T210 (discontinued around 2004-2005) and T230 which is the only LWB model sold now.
2007 T230LX LWB (110PS) with aircon.

Vans are designed for people with imagination. Cars are so limiting ... what can you do with them?

In caddyboys's first post he has put it as being a L220d instead of a 220L diesel. mine is a 55 plate 220L lwb ( hightop ) to clarify things :)

I think it has about 110 now, I'm not sure how much extra torque but it pulls well up hills even when it's loaded. MPG is much the same, where I'd have to rev it to get up a hill it takes it a little easier; but I overtake more now  I've also blocked my egr valve which means the engine doesn't recirculate dirty exhaust gases into the engine to combust again. That's meant to increase MPG as you make the most of the fuel with clean air that hasn't had the oxygen taken out of it during combustion.
Another thing to consider is a Focus air box to get a little more out of it

Fortunately the Connect T220 is also available as the T220 L lwb hi-top

In my first post I was going off a text which my mate had obviously mistyped and me not knowing Fords much (yet) just went with it.

On the little badge on the drivers side it says T220L and its deffo a hi top. I must have seen dozens on the road today, all shapes and sizes and still cant tell the difference which is a swb or lwb. I guess when I pick it up on Saturday i'll know exactly what it is i hope!

What it the length difference? Surely it can't be much??

@CamsTrans, sounds ideal, I've had 2 vwt4's with the egr valve out so will get onto that and I'll also look on the forum as to which Focus airbox I need and what needs doing, then I thinkI might invest the £200 in the remap ;-)
thanks again
